On Saturday night, August 23, with purse offerings high, the horsemen dipped in and took seven horses from the card via claims.

The highest claim for $50,000was followed by three claims at $40,000; one at $30,000 andtwo at $20,000.

The totalspent at the claim box was$240,000; Not bad for a Saturday night, as well as fornew connections who see the opportunity to reap a substantial return on their investments.

None of the present positiveaction at Yonkers Raceway was conceivable before theVLTs came on board.

As a matter of fact, for the most part these classes of races didn't exist at Yonkers pre-VLTs.

Even when the race office began to write them some time ago, many of the races didn't fill, caused in part by an overestimation ofVLT revenues.

Now, with a newpiece of legislation carefully crafted in Albanythat protects the always-intended revenue stream to horsemen and breeders, coupled with the greater experience withalternative gaming revenueover the last several months, purse level enhancementseems secure, thusprompting more owners to drop into to the entry and claiming boxes.

The result is a net win for both industry and government.

Yonkers is now contemplating a $75,000 and $100,000 claimer.

With today'sclimate at the Hilltop Oval and the surge in claims, we have a very good idea as to how well these events will fill.
