TROY — A horse collapsed and died on the track Tuesday night during harness racing at the Miami County Fair.
According to Mike Jess, fair board president, the 2-year-old horse, Fast Ricochet by Full Count, was racing in the sixth race of the evening when it broke stride and collapsed on the track.
“We don’t know what happened until the blood test results are back,” Jess said. “And if they feel they need to do an autopsy from there.”
The driver, Hunter Myers, was uninjured in the incident, Jess said.
“The rider would not get checked out by medics until the horse was taken care of,” said Jess, who said Myers was shook up by the incident.
Jess said the horse is owned by Greg Smith of Urbana.
Fair board members rallied around the track, screening the incident from the public’s view until the owner of the horse could have the horse removed from the track, Jess said.
