On Sunday, August 25 Raceway Park featured the fourth leg of Ohio Sires Stakes for three year-old colts on their 10-race program. Trotters and pacers each competed in one division.
The trotters started the stakes action in the evening’s eighth race. Final Breath (-First Breath-Hold Your Breath) bested his competition by a three easy lengths in his $35,000 stakes event. The race was Final Breath’s 14 win in 20 lifetime starts and increased his current win-streak to four. trains and drove the gelding for Malta, Ohio owner Duane Lowe.
Final Breath started from post five. Beatty drove chilly at the start and sat mid-pack through fractions of :28.2, :58.2 and 1:27.1. Final Breath made his move in the fourth quarter and was an easy 1:57.4 winner. Sunday’s victory pushed Final Breath’s bankroll to $144,197. Finishing behind Final Breath were Buzzen Troubador, Trottin On Over, Heza Rube, Chet N Spanky, Sammy Sammy Sammy, Annie’s Rocketman and Masterdream Chaser. Final Breath was the overwhelming favorite and returned $2.60 to win.
The pacers completed the evening’s stakes action in the ninth race. That Friske Feelin captured the $35,000 fourth leg. Tony Hall drove the gelding for North America’s winningest trainer so far in 2013, Ron Burke. The pacer is owned by Howard Taylor, Edwin Gold and Richard Lombardo.
That Friske Feelin (-Marquee Event-Mark Johnathan) started from post six. Hall sent him hard from the start and made every pole a winning one. That Friske Feelin posted fractions of :27, :57.2, 1:25.2 and 1:53.3. He was two lengths in front at the finish and the mile clocking was just 1/5 of a second off Raceway Park’s track record for three year-old-gelding pacers.
The win was the ninth in 17 career starts and bolstered That Friske Feelin’s bankroll to $132,383. Finishing in succession after the winner were Feelin Lika Winner, Sassy Osborne, River Valley Pearl, Firetowers Stand, Outdoor Fever, Chief Friskie, Hanky L and Forever Kissed. That Friske Feelin was the heavy punter’s choice and paid $2.20 to win.
