The weekend harness racing schedule is red hot at the Charlottetown Driving Park holding the John "Buddy" Campbell Memorial, a Maritime Breeders Final for three-year-old trotters presented by Meridian Farms, the Dusty Lane Shelby Retirement Trot and the $6 Million Breeders Crown Eliminations live from Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto during the 12 dash event.
Post time is 6pm. The action then shifts to Red Shores Summerside on Sunday with a full card including morning line favorite Ultimate Success in the afternoon top class and the Elizabeth “Betty Boop”Jarvis Memorial in race 8. All the races will be carried world-wide at www.redshores.ca.
Maple Leaf Spirit has drawn the rail in the $7,570 MBA final named in honor of a respected horseman, former race secretary and starter John “Buddy” Campbell. Ralph Annear, who co-owns the trotter with Steven Sorrie, Monatgue, will drive the Meadowagoago daughter who has earned nine victories and $34,399 in bank money this season. Waiting on a Woman, who has his name on the Summerside and Charlottetown track record signs, will try to capitalize from post 3.
Corey MacPherson will do the driving for trainer Mitch Tierney. Waiting on a Woman is known to get hot behind the gate and can roll off stride early but usually makes up a ton of ground to the hit the ticket. The trotter has rallied for 8 top three finishes this season. The other horse in the field that has the potential to knock off the favorites is West River Victory and driver Clare MacDonald.
Trot star Dusty Lane Shelby will official retire from racing Saturday night. The former track record holder will parade the field in race 4. Dunmore Alpha, Saulsbrook Balance and Napanee Seelster are the early favorites. A trackside presentation will follow.
The action shifts to Summerside on Sunday when Ultimate Success, a starter in the Governor’s Plate, headlines a top field of pacers in the afternoon feature. Gary Chappell gets the call to drive from trainer Willis Silliker. Blue Meadow Willie, who’s trademark is to roll with the flow early and sweep late a tactic that worked last week for his sixth win, also drew inside for driver Bob MacInnis. Then it’s Rich Raider (Mark Bradley), Roscoes Child (Ken Murphy) and Life Savior (Duane MacEachern) lining up on the wings of the gate.
Buckshot Cheney has been established as the 5-2 morning line favorite in the Elizabeth “Betty Boop” Jarvis in race 8. Corey MacPherson will drive for Jennifer Trainer and Paul Weeks. Big Oster, from the Elton Miller stable, and Woodmere No Fool, owned by Garth Cole, Corey Sudbury, Mathew MacKay and Dale Adams, has a shot at the ticket too.
Drivers Gary Chappell and Mark Bradley have 11 drives booked on the program while Corey MacPherson has 10 and Norris Rogers, who recently celebrated his 800th career win, and Kenny Murphy will each pilot 9 horses on the 12 dash program.
