CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Freddie delivered on his post time promise in the Open trot Friday afternoon at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Marc Campbell supplied the winning steer as the heavy favourite on the rescheduled Friday afternoon program that was originally set for Thursday evening at the capital harness racing oval. Newcomer Stan The Man (Driven by Jason Hughes) laid down the fractions in the $1,950 event cutting splits of 28.2 and 57.2 before making a break in stride at the 1:28.3 three-quarters and being overtaken by Freddie.
The Bo Ford trainee went on to win by seven-and-a-half lengths in 1:58.4 for owners Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston. Stan The Man rallied for second with Frill Seeker (Kenny Arsenault) completing the triactor.
The afternoon card also played host to the first leg of the Alpine $5,000 claiming series with Young Man Matt winning the first division for driver Hughes and trainer Patrick Shepherd. Time of the mile was 1:57.1 for Young Man Matt, who is owned by Carl Kuepfer of Newton, Ont.
Shanghai B G won the second $1,750 division in 1:57.4 with Campbell in the bike for co-owner and trainer Jim Copley and fellow Inverness, N.S., co-owners Ann Copley and Evan Gillis.
Likely To Win Captures Dr. Blair Kelly Memorial
CHARLOTTETOWN, PE – Capitalizing on a garden journey, Likely To Win teamed up with Adam Merner to land in the winner’s circle in the Dr. Blair Kelly Memorial pace Friday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.
Mick Dundee (Driven by Don MacNeill) did all the roadwork, carving splits of 28.4, 59.2 and 1:29.2 while Likely To Win sat patiently in the two-hole then powered forward in the stretch drive to win by a neck in 1:57.4.
The $2,100 Kelly Memorial pace was sponsored by the Charlottetown Veterinary Clinic with Mick Dundee finishing second and Heart And Soul (Walter Cheverie) finishing third. Likely To Win is owned by Nova Scotia owners Blenise Young of Long Point and Lester Campbell of Judique, along with Jeffrey Campbell of Calgary, Alta.
Caughtfoolinaround overwhelmed the pari-mutuel system when he scored his 1:59.3 win in race 7 for a $1,300 purse. Owned by Maggie McCarthy of Murray River and trained by Roy Reynolds, Caughtfoolinaround was paying $101.60 to win when driver Mark Bradley hit the wire on top. Heavy favourite Political Crisis (Merner) settled for second while Electric Syl (Dale Spence) completed the $1,047 triactor combination.
