Methven harness racing driver, Ricky May created New Zealand Cup history at Addington Raceway this afternoon (Tuesday November 13). When May reined Terror To Love to his second consecutive victory in the $600,000 Group One event, May equalled the immortal Ces Devine's record of six Cup wins.

Devine won the New Zealand Cup with Van Dieman (1951), Thunder (1956), False Step (1958, 1959, 1960) and Lord Module (1979). May has now won the New Zealand Cup with Terror To Love (2012), Monkey King (2009 and 2010), Mainland Banner (2005), Iraklis (1997) and Inky Lord (1989).

As good a driver May might be, Terror To Love's owner Terry McDonald also regarded him a colossus of a person.

"They might call him 'wee man' but he is the Cup King. And just to show the measure of the man, he offered to give up the drive after last Wednesday's New Zealand Cup Trial," McDonald told Harnesslink.

McDonald said May had spoken to him about the rumours he had heard surrounding his New Zealand Cup drive.

"Ricky said he had heard that Jim Curtin was engaged to drive 'Terror'. I told him that he was contracted to drive the horse for a year.

"But to show the measure of the man he (Ricky) offered to stand down and give Curtin a chance to repeat his drive of 12 months ago," McDonald said.

May looked to have the race parcelled up when he attempted to claim the lead of Mah Sish at the bell, but Anthony Butt refused to hand up to the $2.30 favourite.

Then the field started to swoop and May found himself one out and three back with some work to do turning for home.

"I saw that Ricky had a handful at the 600m and that made me even more nervous," said co-trainer Paul Court.

"Then when he got clear air, I thought - is he too far back? Ricky knows how to win this race and he didn't let me down," added Court who co-trains the son of  Western Terror with his father Graham at West Melton.

Terror To Love paced the 3200m stand in 3:58.6. Mile rate: 1:59.9. Last 800m: 57.1. Last 400m: 28.3. Margins ¾ of a length, a length, half a head, and two lengths. Second: Highview Tommy (Blair Orange). Third: Sushi Sushi (Natalie Rasmussen). Fourth: Mah Sish (Anthony Butt). Fifth: Major Mark (Colin De Filippi).

After the race McDonald said he would look no further than the Victoria Cup for his stunning 5-year-old.

"I don't want to look any further than that. I know there are a lot of good races on both sides of the Tasman this season but at this stage I just want to take it one race at a time with him.

"There is of course the Jewels 4 and 5-year-old race. I don't think it's right that 5-year-olds start in the Jewels but I don't make the rules.

"So if he's eligible he'll be there," McDonald said.

Terror To Love has now won 17 of his 40 starts. He won $300,000 for today's effort taking his overall bank balance past the $1.1m mark.

McDonald said he would love to come back next year and do a three-peat.

"It would be great to equal False Step's record in the race. That would be a dream," McDonald said McDonald who also bred Terror To Love.

Terror To Love was the tightest favourite to win the Cup since Christian Cullen in 1998.
