On Tuesday afternoon HRSA Executive met with the newly formed SA Trainers and Drivers Association to discuss and receive input on matters pertaining to that groups activities in SA.
The discussions with the Trainers and drivers proved fruitful with a range of matters addressed, these including, the new ratings regime; field selection criteria; concession claims; mentoring opportunities for younger/new drivers and pathways whereby new participants could be bought into the industry.
On Wednesday at the HRSA Board meeting the newly formed association was franked by the Board, who unanimously agreed it was a positive move for our industry.
The Board would also like it to be known that should any other kindred body, or association wish to make representations pertinent to their individual organisation then they would be favourably received.
One particular concern raised by the Trainers and Drivers Association was the treatment of 3YO’s within the new ratings matrix and the requirement, on occasions, of them having to compete against better credentialled horses.
Additionally, there were also concerns raised with respect to older maiden horses, which, after having one or two unplaced runs, and being downgraded were then being asked to compete in races where some runners had won multiple races.
Following this meeting management agreed, that moving forward, programs would be amended to address the concerns raised and to better create more like-for-like race fields.
One such mechanism being that when a race for lower ranked horses is divided then the two fields could be split on total wins, rather than simply randomly. This would provide for the lesser credentialled horses, and those just embarking on their careers, avoiding having to compete against more experienced and proven performers.
Management has also addressed the inequity of horses finishing in 5th position, where currently they neither earn stake money nor do they receive any points reduction. It has been determined that programs will be amended to provide for a 5th placed stake to off-set the imbalance.
