The Thursday, December 8 edition of the State Journal-Register in Springfield, Ill. has quoted Illinois State Fair manager Amy Bliefnick as saying the Fair has planned more nights of harness racing in 2006.
Afternoon racing will again be conducted on Friday and Saturday afternoons, on which the Illinois State Fair 2 and 3-Year-Old colt stakes eliminations will be raced, but in contrast with the Monday evening Grand Circuit racing of the previous two years, Monday's card will be contested in the afternoon.
Twilight harness racing would then begin on Tuesday evening, and continue through Thursday evening. Tuesdays have been previously reserved for the second day of Grand Circuit racing, and the Colt Stakes consolations and finals have been raced on Wednesday ant Thursday.
"We still don't have lights, but we'll start early evening," Bliefnick told the Journal-Register.
Twilight harness racing at the Illinois State Fair began as an experiment in 2004 and was continued in 2005. The late afternoon Grand Circuit and betting cards were so well received by the public that they proved to be two of the better attended programs in the Fair’s grandstand.
The 2006 Illinois State Fair will run from August 11 through August 20.
