Illinois State Fair freshmen champions My Boy David and Hot N Sporty are expected to win their respective Cardinal Pace elimination races on Friday night (October 7) and then renew their first season rivalry in the $65,000 Final next Friday, October 14.
DuQuoin’s Governor Cup champion My Boy David is the overwhelming 4-5 morning line favourite in the fifth race first Cardinal elimination for Illinois owners Shirley Le Vin and David Riff, while James and Donna Crebs’ Springfield title holder is the heavy 7-5 first flash choice to get back on the winning track in the seventh race second elimination.
The first four finishers in each of the two seven horse fields will earn a start in the Friday October 14 Cardinal Championship for Illinois bred 2-Year-Old pacing colts and geldings.
My Boy David rattled off sizzling 1.50.4 consecutive miles when he won his Governor’s Cup elimination and the $80,000 Final for trainer Homer Hochstetler at DuQuoin in early September. The son offollowed up by breezing in his 1.51.2 (26.4s final quarter) in his Orange and Blue elimination.
However, he had to settle for second place as the 6-5 Super Night favorite in the final when he was pushed to very fast fractions of 1.26.2, 54.2s and 1.22.4 before he gave to the winner Fox Valley Tribal.

Hot N Sporty comes off a disappointing ninth place finish in the September 17 Orange and Blue Championship when theoffspring was victimised by all kinds of traffic problems.
The youngster settled into sixth in the early going on Super Night however there was a horse outside of him throughout much of the mile, locking him in. He was then pushed him back to ninth with a quarter mile to go. He then faced a wall of horses and couldn’t find a clear path before he was wrapped up.
Hot N Sporty not only captured 10 of his first 11 first season starts but his 1.50.2 Springfield State Fair Final victory equalled the World Record for a 2-Year-Old gelded pacer and is the fastest by any freshman this season in North America.
After Hot N’ Sporty’s 1.52.3 O& B elimination triumph a month ago, driver Tony Morgan described the youngster: “He’ a push-button horse and you know have to ask him to do anything—he just does it. He won’t work any harder than he has to, but he doesn’t have to.”
Hot N Sporty only needs to work hard enough to be fourth in Friday’s seventh race elimination to be a Cardinal finalist when he leaves from the two-post with Tony. Joe Somebody (4-1, Andy Miller) has the pole position, while from the three-slot out Fox Valley Piston (12-1), Thisbigdogwilfight (6-1, Pat Berry) Josh’s Z Tam (6-1, Tim Tetrick), Wonderful One (9-2, Brent Holland) and Fino Sport (8-1, Dave Magee) will be his adversaries.
