Slugfest recorded his first Open victory of the ’15 season

Slugfest (Conway Hall), the 2014 Trotter of the Year at Saratoga Casino and Raceway, recorded his first Open victory of the ’15 season on Sunday afternoon at the Spa.

The Maureen Salino-trained trotter moved first over in the $18,000 co-feature and wrestled control away from the frontrunner before holding off a late challenge from the race’s 1-5 favorite. Slugfest stopped the timer in 1:56.1 while pulling off the mild upset at odds of 7-1. Jay Randall piloted the six year old trotter to the Open score.

The favored Luminosity (Billy Dobson) had to settle for second while longshot Red Hot Herbie (Jordan Derue) finished third.

Slugfest paid $17.40 to win and led an exacta and triple that returned $39.80 and $252.50, respectively.

Jackie Rousse’s Happily Ever After (Well Said) parlayed the pocket ride to victory to secure her first win of the season in the co-featured Fillies and Mares Open. Frank Coppola Jr was the winning driver behind the four year old mare who was making just her second start of the season.

Live racing resumes on Thursday at Saratoga with a twilight race card beginning at 4:00pm.
