Stillwater, NY – Harness racing trainer Joseph DeCarlo of Clifton Park was arrested Saturday after an investigation revealed he has been abusing a Standardbred race horse.

DeCarlo, 48, was apprehended by Stillwater police following a week long investigation that discovered he was maliciously and cruelly overdriving and abusing a race horse that resulted in severe and extensive injuries to the inside and outside of the horse’s mouth.

The horse is reportedly recovering from its injuries and is under veterinary care.

DeCarlo was processed by the Stillwater police and then released. He was issued an appearance ticket to appear in Stillwater Town Court.

DeCarlo, who races primarily at Saratoga Raceway and Yonkers Raceway, has been a licensed trainer with the United States Trotting Association since 2004.  His records show he has 252 career wins as a trainer and $1.9 million in purses won by the horses he has trained. In 2013 he has sent out 45 starters with 11 wins.
