Ryan Trusler, general manager at Hiawatha Horse Park, called it a cordial meeting that guaranteed the upcoming harness racing season in Sarnia, but not much else. Trusler and Hiawatha owner Jim Henderson met face-to-face this week with OLG officials for the first time since the devastating news that Hiawatha Slots will close April 30.

"It was stated unequivocally that the slots program at Hiawatha will end April 30. That is non-negotiable," Trusler said.

However, Henderson and Trusler were assured that the 2012 racing season can go ahead as planned and the OLG will pay the horsemen and Henderson the same as in 2011.

For 12 years, Henderson has received 10% of the revenue from Hiawatha Slots and the track has received another 10% to boost the purse.
