Chris Lewis - And connections of Fidelius Charm

Star reinsman Chris Lewis notched his sixth victory in the Sales Classic for two-year-old fillies when he guided 7/1 chance Fidelius Charm to a convincing victory over French Fashion and La Joconde in the $70,000 event at Gloucester Park on Friday night.

And now Lewis has high hopes that Fidelius Charm will go one better than her dam Classical Gas, whom he drove into second place in the Pearl final in February 1992.

Fidelius Charm now has had four starts for three wins and an extremely close second for owner Rob Watson and Northam trainer Jesse Moore and she will be one of the fancies for the $100,000 Pearl to be run at Gloucester Park in June.

Fidelius Charm was the solitary runner on the back line and Lewis quickly moved her off the pegs and into the moving line in the first circuit.

La Joconde, who had withstood a spirited early challenge from the 2/1 favourite Go Some More, was leading from that filly at the bell, with Fidelius Charm in eighth position, out three wide, but with cover.

Gary Hall jun. shot La Joconde away to a 5m lead over Love The Red with 450m to travel, but she wilted in the straight and was unable to stave off the fast-finishing Fidelius Charm, who burst to the front 100m from the post.

Fidelius Charm, who cost $10,000 as a yearling, now has earned $64,575 in stakes and appears certain to prove a far better performer than Classical Gas, a Classic Garry mare who had 82 starts for six wins, 16 placings and earnings of $77,853.

Lewis’s earlier successes in the two-year-old fillies’ sales classic were with Miss Booth (1991), Parthenon (1994), Backin A Jiffy (2000), Hindu Sitara (2003) and Amongst Royalty (2006). Moore’s previous training success in this event was with Jupiters Darling in 2005.

The win of Fidelius Charm was the second leg of a driving treble to Lewis, who also was successful with No Blue Manna and Pats Dilemma.
