Smiling Shard - downing Lanercost in the Breeders' Crown

"Of all the horses I've driven he'd have the biggest heart."

"He was the most natural two-year-old I've driven. Beautifully gaited and a beautiful horse to drive."

"He had an amazing attitude and always gave 120% every time he went out on the track."

These are the words of champion driver Dexter Dunn when asked about

he recently retired millionaire pacer Smiling Shard, who will stand the

upcoming season at Alabar's Echuca farm.

Dexter Dunn has every reason to have a genuine fondness for Smiling

hard. He won 15 races with him including three Group One features as a

wo-year-old - the New Zealand Sires Stakes Final, the New Zealand

arness Jewels and the Australasian Breeders Crown.

"One of his greatest achievements was as a two-year-old - to be

ut there in the first Young Guns Heats at the start of December and

till be going strong at the Breeders Crown in August. That showed heart

and how good a two-year-old he was," Dunn stated.

Smiling Shard's time of 1:53.7 when winning the Harness Jewels 2yo

merald was not only the fastest time ever recorded by 2yo in New

ealand, it was the fastest time ever set by a male pacer of any age in

ew Zealand!

His outstanding freshman year saw him voted the NZ Two Year Old Pacer of the Year.

As a three-year-old Smiling Shard and Dexter won the rich New Zealand

Yearling Sales Series Open Final and the Northern Stakes. He narrowly

issed becoming a double Australasian Breeders Crown champion finishing

econd in the Final.

In the ensuing two seasons the champion duo starred in the

ree-for-all ranks winning back-to-back Kaikoura Cups (in 2:58.7 and

:58.9 for the 2400m stand), the Ashburton Cup (with a 55.1 last half

nd a 25.7 last quarter), running second in the Hunter Cup, Taylor Mile

nd the Franklin Cup (in 4:00.8 for the 3200m) and third in the NZ 4yo

ewels and the Interdominion Grand Final at Addington behind the

hampions Im Themightyquinn and Blacks A Fake.

Appropriately, Smiling Shard rewarded Dexter with his 200th winning

rive in the 2008/09 season making him the first driver (or jockey) to

in 200 races in a season in New Zealand.

Smiling Shard was only ever driven by one other driver - Gavin Lang,

n winning performances in the Australasian Breeders Crown Repechage and

Semi Final as a three-year-old.

Lang was also a Smiling Shard fan saying "I loved him, he just had this tremendous desire to win that only the very best horses have."

Overall, Smiling Shard started 50 times for 17 wins, 15 seconds and 7

thirds. In those 17 wins he defeated no less than 19 Group One winners.

As a two-year-old his record was impeccable - 17 starts for 8 wins, 5

seconds and 3 thirds. He also had a great affinity with Australia

tarting there 9 times for 5 wins, 3 seconds and a 4th in the NSW Derby.

His total stake earnings are $1,178,793.

Cran Dalgety, who trained the glamour colt throughout his illustrious

career, had this to say about one of his all-time favourites.

"He had a real presence about him at the yearling sales. He just

ooked like he was ready for action. We paid $41,000 for him. We were

oping to get a precocious two-year-old - we certainly got that but we

lso got a whole lot more.

"Away from his record his greatest attribute was his kindness of

ttitude, not only to train but to travel. You felt like you could bring

him into the house and sit him in your chair - he was such a gentleman

nd intelligent horse.

"He was so kind in the stable but so aggressive on the track.

"When he won the Breeders Crown as a two-year-old, Lanercost came

t him and he was all done at the 500. It was only determination that

on him that race - he just wouldn't let the other horse get past him."

"You need horses that will fight for you and not lie down. It all comes down to attitude and he had it."

Smiling Shard is one of three millionaire sons of the Artsplace sire, Grinfromeartoear. The other two - Mr Feelgood and Mister Big are both off to tremendous starts to their young siring careers.

Smiling Shard has a truly exciting pedigree for a stallion. Not only

s he bred 3x3 to Abercrombie but also 3x3 to Blue Horizon, a

rand-daughter of the outstanding broodmare, Shifting Sands.

This is the wonderful Golden Miss family, a prolific family for producing successful sires like Rocknroll Hanover, Grinfromeartoear, Real Desire, Safely Kept, Panorama and Strike Out. For good measure, Smiling Shard also carries a third strain of this family and is bred 6x6x6 to Golden Miss herself.

He is a half brother to the 1:55.6 winning mare, Pemberton Shard and

is dam is a half sister to the outstanding 29 win, $911,689 earning

acer Sly Flyin whose multiple Group One victories included the New

ealand Sires Stakes 2yo Final and the NZ Free-For-All.

Smiling Shard will stand at Alabar Bloodstock alongside his sire Grinfromeartoear at a fee of $2,200 (incl GST) in Australia and $2,000 (plus GST) in New Zealand.
