Series second favourite Smoken Up again had a regulation victory much to the delight of those harness racing punters who were prepared to take the long odds-on quote of $1.10.

Not pushed from gate six, Smoken Up ambled to the front with reinsman John Justice sitting quiet, crossing the pole marker Russley Rascal entering the straight on the first occasion.

Not breaking any speed records so it seemed, the son of Tinted Cloud was challenged out wide on turning by opening night winner Crombie (three wide last lap from last), with many of the crowd in attendance anticipating a boil-over including course broadcaster Richard Bell.

Doing only what he had to do, Smoken Up held a margin to the wire after splits of 30.2, 29.4, 28.5 and 27.4, scoring by one and a half metres in a rate of 1-55.5 over Crombie who was so game, with Russley Rascal a metre away third after moving away from the inside on straightening.

Lightning Raider ran an improved race for fourth after following Crombie home, while Artorius again finished fifth from three back the markers.
