Smoken Up - Tradesman type performance from the Victorian pacing machine

You wouldn't expect anything less from Australasia's fastest pacer and Smoken Up didn't disappoint his band of harness racing supporters when paying $1.30 to win the third heat of the 2012 Inter Dominion Pacing Championship at Gloucester Park tonight (Friday February 17).

When John Justice took the 9-year-old son of Tinted Cloud to the lead down the back straight the first time, the 1700m mobile then became a race for second.

Saucy Legend and Gary Hall Junior made last year's Inter Dominion runner-up work hard for the lead after sprinting a quick 27.3 opening first quarter.

But when Justice got over to the markers he gave his charge a breather and they recorded a 57.3 first half.

He then reeled off 29 and 28.2 third and fourth quarters.

It was tradesman type performance from the Victorian pacing machine. His time of 1:53.7 (mile rate: 2:00.2) was the same time as what Auckland Reactor recorded in the first heat.

Dasher VC (Chris Lewis) and Saucy Legend (Hall Jr) finished second and third - 1.6 metres and 4.7 metres away.

It was Smoken Up's 58th win from 107 starts and took his career earnings to just under $3 million.

It was also a just reward for regular driver and trainer, Lance Justice, who was badly injured in a race accident at Melton in December - and had to watch a race he so dealy wanted to be incolved in.
