Exciting pacer Smolda is set for his clash with Terror To Love in Saturday’s Addington Interdomion heat after a scintillating workout at Ashburton last Saturday.
Put through his paces by Purdon behind the galloping pacemaker, Raesawinner, Smolda dashed home in 25.8 to stop the clock at a tidy 2-56 for the 2400 metre journey.
But, perhaps what was even more impressive than the run itself was how well the five-year-old son of Courage Under Fire came through the run.
“He really has come up a treat this time in and his run today was top notch,” said Purdon, who could barely contain the smile that was attempting to run across his face.
“He has come through that run in terrific order hasn’t he? He would barely blow a candle out,” Purdon said matter-of-factly as Smolda pricked his ears and leaped into the air.
Meanwhile, Strata Star, who finished a game second in the Christian Cullen Canterbury Mares Speed Series Final, is unlikely to race in New Zealand again.
“She is going over to race in Sydney with Master Lavros and is likely to stay over there after he returns home,” said trainer Regan Todd.
