Somebeachsomewhere shook off a sore foot to remain undefeated with a dominant 1:49 win in the C$1.5 million North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack on Saturday night. Driven by Paul MacDonell for trainer Brent MacGrath, Somebeachsomewhere got away fourth into the first turn, but used a slingshot move and assumed the lead just past the :26.4 first quarter.

After that, it was a battle for the crumbs, as Somebeachsomewhere powered through fractions of :54.4 and 1:22. Badlands Nitro and Brian Sears made a move in the third quarter, but could only muster second, 2-3/4 lengths back. Santanna Blue Chip was third.

"It sends chills up my spine," MacDonell, who also won the C$588,706 Elegantimage two races later with Lantern Kronos, said. "I could feel everyone behind us and supporting us leading up to this week. Everybody in the country, everybody in the United States just loved this horse. He's the whole show."

A crowd of more than 10,000 showed up to cheer Somebeachsomewhere. The air was electric as the son of Mach Three came out onto the track for the post parade. The crowd grew twice as loud as he finished well in hand. MacDonell never went to the whip; in the stretch he took a look back and hand-drove him to his first North America Cup driving win.

The mile was one-fifth of a second off of the stakes record set by Red River Hanover, in 2004. Next for Somebeachsomewhere, who is now unbeaten in nine career starts for owner by Schooner Stables, is the Meadowlands Pace, which is scheduled for July 19.

"He's going to have a couple weeks off now before he really does anything," MacGrath said. "I just wanted a good horse. I'm not shooting him for any particular race."
