Trainer Joe Holloway is having a hellva day as his Somwherovrarainbow used the passing lane to her full advantage in capturing the $371,400 final of the Blue Chip Farms Matchmaker Series at Yonkers Raceway Saturday and earlier on the day his Always B Miki won the $49,015 Reynolds Memorial at the Meadowlands.
The culmination of the harness racing Grand Circuit event for older pacing mares saw Somwherovrarainbow and driver Brian Sears leave from the rail but was challenged right away by Yagonnakissmeornot and driver Daniel Dube. They took the lead away and led the field to the opening quarter mile in :27.
They raced that way past the half in :55.4 and that is when the action heated up as Anndrovette (Tim Tetrick) came first-over after the race leaders with Feeling You (Tyler Buter) grabbing the second over cover. Past the three-quarters in 1:23.4 Anndrovette kept charging on the outside but Yagonnakissmeornot and Dube would not give up the lead.
As they came down the stretch, Yagonnakissmeornot still looked strong but everyone kept coming at her and Sears used the passing lane with Somwherovrarainbow to catch them at the wire to win by a length in in a speedy 1:52.3. Krispy Apple (Jason Bartlett) was third.
Owned by Ted Gewertz of New York City and Diamond Creek Racing of Wellville, PA, it was the fourth win this year for Somwherovrarainbow, who is sired by Somebeachsomewhere. She went off at odds of 2-1 and paid $6.90 to win.
The rains really picked up for the 8th race $75,000 Matchmaker Series Consolation event but the weather did not have any bearing on a great effort by 20-1 Fashion Mystery who upset the field.
Leaving hard from post five, Fashion Mystery and driver Eric Carlson took the quick lead, then gave way to Ideal In Vegas (Jordan Stratton) and they raced that way in the heavy rain as late in the mile Royal Cee Cee N (Ron Pierce) tried coming first-over in vain.
Then as they turned for home, Eric Carlson tipped Fashion Mystery to the outside and they came after Ideal In Vegas, collared them in mid stretch, then Ideal In Vegas looked to start coming back but it was too late as Fashion Mystery went on to a half length triumph in 1:55.4. Ideal In Vegas was second with Let’s Go Higher (Jason Bartlett) third.
Sired by Real Artist, it was the first win in nine starts for Fashion Mystery, who paid $43.80 to win. She is trained and owned by Gilbert Garcia-Herrera of Columbus, NJ.
