Yesterday's twilight Invercargill Harness Racing Club meeting (Thursday December 2) was dominated by Southland with Nathan Williamson winning his first race as a trainer. He then combined with Brent Barclay for Southland to take out the 2010 American Ideal Inter-Provincial Drivers Challenge.

Last season, which was his last as a Junior Driver, Williamson followed in his father Phil's footsteps and began training. Although no wins from his 16 starts, he trained Latheronwheel to two Group placings. Yesterday afternoon he got off the mark in Race 1 with Jackka Justy, followed by Burano in Race 5 making it a double for the meeting.

Opening as $3.50 favourites, Williamson and Barclay narrowly took out the Drivers Challenge with 25 points over $12.00 outsiders, Canterbury. With a win (The Guardsman), a third (The Fiery Ginga) and fourth (Coughton Court) over the five races, Williamson earned 18 points for Southland, while the remaining seven points came from Barclay's second (Ardlussa Express).

Canterbury (Dexter Dunn and Mark Jones) finished on 23 points, all of which were earned by Dunn who took out the Individual Champion for the second consecutive year. His points were made up from a win (Burano), two thirds (Colleen Patricia and Watrulookingat) and a fourth (Capital Guest).
