On paper the Port FM mobile pace at the Oamaru harness racing today looked a three horse affair and for once thats just how it turned out.

Alta Jerome, Speights Girl and Goodness Gracious Me looked to have a class edge on their rivals but sorting out the winner from that trio was never going to be easy.

The draw favoured Alta Jerome who drew one with Speights Girl on his back on the second line and Goodness Gracious Me drawn beside Speights Girl on the second line.

As expected Alta Jerome led with Speights Girl in the trail and Goodness Gracious Me three back in the running line and that was the way it stayed until they swung for home.

Goodness Gracious Me loomed up four wide as they straightened for the run home with Speights Girl making full use of the passing lane but Alta Jerome was proving a tough nut to crack.

It took Speights Girl the length of the straight to get her head in front of a very game Alta Jerome, who was seriously attacked from the 800 meters with Goodness Gracious Me just a head away in third.

Remarkably, Speights Girl  proved to be the fly in the ointment for Alta Jerome for the third time in the last month. On two of those occasions she downed him via the passing lane, while the other time she stopped on him badly down the back straight before he recovered well for a luckless second.

It was the sixth lifetime win for the Cran Dalgety trained daughter of Mach Three from just sixteen starts and took her stake winnings to $31,782.

She paced the 2000 meters in a slick 2:26.9 (1:58.1), which was a track record for a three-year-old filly with smart closing sectionals of 56 and 27.6.

It was a welcome change of luck for her driver Dexter Dunn who had had a couple of winless meetings lately as he closes in on 200 wins for this season.

The second foal from the former very talented juvenile Exotic Lover 1:55.5 pl ($110,336), Speights Girl is a full sister to the smart Abraxas 1:58.4 ($82,589). Further increasing her broodmare value is the fact that her second dam is none other than the brilliant Under Cover Lover 1:51.8 ($864,923).

While todays win was a narrow affair, Speights Girl looks capable of a couple more wins yet before retirement to the broodmare ranks.
