Harness racing sales are exactly the same as any other sale in that prices are driven by the demand for the product against the supply of the product.
At the upcoming Bathurst Gold Crown Sale there are only four Sportswriters in the whole sale and as a keenly sought after stallion at the best of times, Sportswriter can expect his four yearlings to attract a premium on sale day.
With his first crop only half way through their four year old careers in Australia, Sportswriter has already produced 114 winners to date with stakes topping $2,700,000 and rising.
Sportswriter has produced 79 winners from his first crop of 157 foals for a percentage of over 50% which is right up there with the very best.
We thought we would have a brief look at the pedigrees of a couple of the Sportswriters for sale at Bathurst.
Lot 18 A – Colt by Sportswriter from Marysia 1:57.8 By In The Pocket
A half brother to six winners including the very talented Mr Bojangles 1:56 ($138,509) and Myouri 1:57.1 ($106,699) while half sisters in Medea and Tyalla have already produced Our Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($152,126) and Baccarat 1:56.3 ($94,133).
The second dam Aberfeldy left ten winners including the brilliant colt Reba Lord 1:56 ($384,880) and the champion filly of her year in Megaera 1:56.8 ($250,646)
Aberfeldy won the New Zealand Broodmare Excellence Award in 2001 which is a good indication of what a great broodmare she was.
Lot 42 – Filly by Sportswriter from Wicker Bella 2:00.8 ($11,075)
This filly is the eighth foal from Wicker Bella and to date she has produced five winners while her three year old daughter had her first start just recently and looks an early winner and is on course to give her dam six winners.
Padabing Stride ($57,180) is the best colt from Wicker Bella to date while Bella Jam Jam ($32,530) who won a heat of the Bathurst Gold Tiara and ran second in the final is the best filly.
Two half sisters to Wicker Bella in Wicker Maker and Wicker Bee have produced some nice horses such as Wicker Blue ($70,902), Mammals Maker ($40,813), Tulhurst Vee Jay ($39,929) and Mammals Rocket ($38,870)
Wicker Bella has done a great job in the broodmare barn and it is hard to envisage a Sportswriter not adding to that record.
With only the four yearlings available in the whole sale, the Sportswriters look sure to attract plenty of attention this Sunday.
