State Treasurer delivered as the heavy favourite in the $60,000 Summertime Pacing Series final in the third race on Monday evening's (July 30) harness racing card at Mohawk. Driver Tyler Moore guided the 3-year-old colt to the winner's circle for his father, trainer Dr. Ian Moore.
State Treasurer sat third along the rail as Twin B Impressive (Sylvain Filion) clocked the :26.4 opening panel, but as soon as the field of sophomores entered the backstretch, the 1-5 favourite was on the move. State Treasurer cleared to the lead, taking the group of 10 to the mid-way point in :55.1 and then the three-quarters in 1:23.
The son of Real Desire-Ideal Treasure, who also romped in his second-leg division, used a :27 final frame to return to victory lane, notching is fifth win of the season in a career-best performance of 1:50. Twin B Impressive was beaten by three and a quarter lengths and Long Live Rock (Rick Zeron) finished third.
“Once I got to the front, the horse settled down really nice and he actually relaxed for me a little bit,” said Tyler Moore after the win. “He waited for them to come and when they did come, he had a ton of gear left for them so I felt good.”
With the win, State Treasurer scored his sixth triumph in 19 lifetime starts and lifted his career earnings to $241,886, which includes a fifth-place finish in this year’s Pepsi North America Cup at Mohawk.
The colt is owned by Sally MacDonald of Souris, P.E.I. and Sophie MacDonald of Regina, Saskatchewan.
He returned $2.70 to win.
