In just his second season of training and from limited starters Southland harness racing horseman Stephen Baucke has registered his first official training win. The Dunearn resident produced Citylight to win in the hands of Alan Beck at the Wyndham Harness Racing Club's meeting held yesterday (Tuesday January 18).

A dairy farmer by trade the former North Islander became interested in harness racing through family ties to the sport. "Dad had a licence twenty odd years ago and my in-laws have always been involved, he said. Baucke made the shift to the deep South in an effort to grow his business back in 2000 and is now well established in the Dunearn district near Winton.

Unplaced in her previous six outings it was a timely show of form by the three year old daughter of Christian Cullen. "We sent her to Tony Herlihy's to have a go at the Sires Stakes Series but she didn't go too good last start. Yesterday was a really positive result for us because we have a half brother by Mach Three to her in the sale." Driven close to the pace by Alan Beck, Citylight looked to be travelling far too well for the opposition, turning for home the speedy filly stretched out to win by a length and a half at the line in a smart 1.56.5 for the mobile mile.

Harness racing Dexter Dunn went within one win of achieving the fastest 100 wins in a season when he scored with the as yet unbeaten Terrorway. Trained at Westwood Beach by super strike-rate trainers Graeme Anderson and Amber Hoffman, the son of Western Terror again looked good picking up his second career win from as many starts.

Top Sire: 8 sires from 8 races.
