Yesterday the Waimate Trotting Club had a successful harness racing return to their home track for the first time in nearly five years, since high winds damaged the grandstand and other buildings back in September 2013.

The club which held its first totalisator trotting meeting at the racecourse on December 9, 1950, had been using the Oamaru racecourse for its race meetings for the last few years, while a $400,000 redevelopement took place at the Waimate track.

Club president Lex Williams said, "It has been a great day with a large crowd in attendance and it was fantastic to see harness racing return to Waimate."

"The last five years have been challenging, but we have had some great community support and the members have worked hard to make it happen

"We had a sports day here as well today, with wheelbarrow racing, sheaf tossing, and sulky racing so it was a lot of fun," he said.

This years Waimate Cup was won for the second time in two years by the Hamish Hunter trained Acolyte who led for most of the way and came out a narrow winner after a gruelling home stretch battle.

Acolyte was driven by local reinsman Matthew Williamson and paced the standing start 2600m in 3-28.0 with a closing 800m in a slogging 63.6 with the 400m in 31.9.
