After nearly 30 years, Tioga Downs racetrack is springing back to life.

The $32 million investment is on track for a May 2006 grand opening. Tioga Downs hosted a "Topping Out" ceremony on Friday, February 3, 2006. Attendees included Tioga County public officials, business and community leaders, as well as interested parties from around the Twin Tiers area.

Martha Sauerbrey, executive director of the Tioga County Chamber of Commerce, opened the "Topping Out" ceremony. Jonathan A. Arnesen, President and COO of Nevada Gold and Casinos, Inc. thanked all the structural engineers as they head home and welcomed all the interior tradesmen as they begin their job installing plumbing, wiring, floors, walls and finishing.

The last piece of structural steel was put into place on Friday with Jonathan A. Arnesen, Jeffrey R. Gural of Southern Tier Acquisition, Ed Tracy of TrackPower, Inc. and New York State Senator Thomas W. Libous, 52 District, signing the beam, along side the names of each contractor involved in the project. "A lot of the local folks here in Tioga County worked hard to help make this project happen," emphasised Libous. "It's one of the most exciting job creation initiatives ever in our community."

Tioga Downs is switching from construction mode to operational mode. They will begin interviewing and hiring employees immediately. Approximately 375 jobs are expected to result from the project which is estimated to create a $42 million economic impact for the region.

Arnesen stated, "This racetrack is just the start of a great financial impact for this area. The possibility for a variety of companies to bring their business here is tremendous. Our 'County Fair' motif is a perfect attraction for the entire family."

Tioga Downs occupies a 130-acre site along the north side of NY 17/I 86, two miles west of exit 62. Over 800,000 visitors a year are projected from a 50-75 mile radius, including Pennsylvania. The facility will have parking for 1,800 cars.
