STAR Tasmanian pacer Beautide had to settle for a gallant fourth in the Group 1 SEW Eurodrive Victoria Cup at Tabcorp Park Melton (Victoria) last night.
Starting from near outside of the second row, his trainer-driverhad no option but to ease back and settle near the rear and rely on the gelding's powerful finishing burst to secure victory.
The pace has hot early but settled to a more pedestrian tempo and that was always going to make it difficult for the back markers to overhaul the front-runners.
The race was won by the-trained For A Reason that enjoyed a covered run three-wide to the back straight the last time with eventual runner-up Caribbean Blaster ahead of him and being hailed the winner turning for home.
Beautide and the race favourite Christen Me also joined the three-wide train but they were unable to make up enough ground to stake a claim on the Group 1 trophy with Christen Me gaining the judges decision over Beautide in a photo-finish for third.
Beautide lost no admirers as his effort to finish so close was full of merit.
Rattray said before the race that the Victoria Cup would most likely have a short spell before being prepared to tackle the 2014 Inter Dominion series at Menangle (NSW) in March.
