THE Tasmanian racing industry's controlling body Tasracing has reallocated nearly $150,000 to harness stakes for all Sunday twilight meetings between 1 January 2014 and 30 June 2014.
It will include 17 feature races and 12 Tasbred Sires heats.
Tasracing chief executive officer Eliot Forbes said the decision to allocate the funds in this way was taken following consultation with peak industry representatives.
"It was seen as the most responsible and equitable way to reallocate the funds after deletion of a number of races due to a low number of acceptors so far this season," he said.
"We understand this was largely because of the wet winter we have experienced, particularly in northern Tasmania, resulting in delays to horses being returned to training which impacted harness field sizes.
"This reallocation will provide a welcome boost to the industry as harness field sizes start to return to satisfactory levels."
Dr Forbes said stakes for Sunday twilight races would increase to $7500, the 17 identified feature races would increase from $8000 to $10,000 while the 12 Tasbred Sires heats would also increase from $8000 to $10,000.
The total reallocation for the six-month period is $149,500.
Dr Forbes said the stakes increase would only apply from 1 January to 30 June 2014, after which the harness stakes budget for 2014/15 would be determined.
