Well bred harness racing mare Romantic Moment (-Perhaps Love) is proving to be a handy addition to ’s stables.
Romantic Moment landed in Szczypka’s care about five months ago after one of his long time stable clients, Brendon Morrison, purchased her for $2500.
Morrison called on a few family members and friends to become shareholders and the mare gave them a great start by winning at her first try for her new owners at New Norfolk in March.
“She’s missed a cheque only twice since I’ve had her so she’s done a good job so far,” Szczypka said.
On Sunday night in Hobart the four-year-old mare produced a barnstorming finish to win a C0-C1 over 2090 metres with claiming driveraboard.
Sing And Dance led and set a leisurely tempo and she looked to be travelling well heading down the back stretch the last time.
But when she capitulated on the home turn a wall of horses emerged for the charge to the line with Romantic Moment the widest runner.
Under strong driving from Collins, Romantic Moment stuck her head out right on the line to score by a half-neck from Our Gypsy Rose with Mon Soie a metre away third.
Collins said the mare was courageous over the concluding stages.
“When I made my move in the back straight she was three-wide with cover on the back of Mon Soie but when that mare found the death my mare was exposed a bit early,” Collins said.
“But to her credit she found enough to keep in touch and let down like a good horse over the concluding stages,” he said.
Romantic Moment showed a lot of promise as a two-year-old when in the care of Paul Belcher who is now trying his hand at politics with the hope of success at the upcoming state election.
Romantic Moment won at her second race start and went on to finish second to the state’s top juvenile filly at the time, Cloudy Delight, in the $25,000 Betfair Sweepstakes final.
However she couldn’t recapture that form as a three-year-old last season.
Szczypka says the four-year-old mare is capable of winning again.
Romantic Moment is owned and raced by Brendon Morison with Paul Turner, Cheryl Scott, Keith Morrison, June Morrison, Kevin Morrison, Daniel Morrison, Steven Morrison, Warren and Leanne Viney.
