With a strong late kick after getting a perfect second-over trip, Dedi’s Dragon and driver Yannick Gingras pulled the biggest upset of their career at odds of 43-1, beating the 1/9 favorite Captaintreacherous by a half length in capturing the $250,000 Monument Circle Pace at Hoosier Park Saturday.
Covering the one mile race in a lifetime best 1:50.4, Dedi’s Dragon did what only one other horse could do this year in 14 races against Captaintreacherous and that is to defeat the 2012 Pacer of the Year.
The 11th race co-feature began with Fool Me Once and driver Ron Pierce shooting to the early lead from post eight with emeritus Maxumus (Doug McNair) grabbing the two-hole trip to the opening quarter mile in :26. But then it was Captaintreacherous and driver Tim Tetrick moving first-over and taking command well before the half mile marker in :55.
Seemingly comfortable on the lead, Captaintreacherous led the field to the three-quarters in 1:23.1 as Beach Memories (David Miller) was first-over and gaining ground with Dedi’s Dragon enjoying the second-over draft on the outside.
As the field started down the stretch, Captaintreacherous was in high gear and by mid stretch looked to be adding his 13th victory on the season but after fanning three-wide and racing the middle of the track, Gingras had Dedi’s Dragon in full stride and they not only collared Captaintreacherous before the wire but passed them by to win by a half length. Apprentice Hanover (Jody Jamieson) was third.
It was only the fourth win this year for Dedi’s Dragon, who is trained by Ron Burke and is owned by the Burke Racing Stable, Weaver Brucemi, Collura and Hendler. Sired by Dragon Again, Dedi’s Dragon rewarded his supporters at the betting windows at 43-1, paying $88.80 to win.
With Hoosier Park track management going game on the wagering pools, bridge jumpers took the opportunity and wagered nearly $100,000 to show on Captaintreacherous.
His loss tonight most certainly will shake up the end of the year voting for Horse of the Year honors between a tightly group of top horses including Captaintreacherous, Bee A Magician, I Luv The Nitelife and Father Patrick.
