State Treasurer and Randy Waples - capture the 2013 Molson Pace

Randy Waples had a harrowing drive to get to The Raceway at Western Fair District in London, Ontario, from Mohawk tonight in time to drive State Treasurer in the track's signature event, the $150,000 Molson Pace. But the trip proved worthwhile as his heads up drive in the race was much quicker and certainly more profitable.

As the wings folded Yannick Gingras and Foiled Again, who were vying for their third straight Molson Pace victory, left from the rail and maintained the top spot with Betterthancheddar, who left behind Foiled Again in the trailing post eight, close up in second which parked Aracache Hanover out as the field paced by the opening quarter in :26.

By the time they reached the half in :55.1 Foiled Again was still in control but the field was now four in and four out. As the they rolled down the backstretch towards the three-quarters Waples sent State Treasurer three wide to get around Aracache Hanover, who had been repelled by Foiled Again, and seemed to get by the leader by the 1:23.1 three-quarters.

Down the stretch the iron horse Foiled Again battled back but a three peat for North America's richest pacer of all time was not to be this night. State Treasurer went on to win in 1:51.1 and Betterthancheddar, who was dying for room down the stretch, took second for George Brennan while Foiled Again had to settle for third.

The remainder, in order of position, were: Versado, Keystone Velocity, Rock On Moe, A Rocknroll Dance and Aracache Hanover.

It was the second win in four starts for State Treasurer a four-year-old son of Real Desire trained by Dr. Ian Moore and owned by Sally MacDonald of PEI and Sophie MacDonald of Saskatchewan.

"He's got an unreal attitude, he won't quit this horse, ever since we had him as a two-year-old," noted Moore following the trophy presentations. "He tries his heart out for you every race he goes.

"He trained really well this winter in Florida, he thickened up and got very strong. He took a new mark at Mohawk (1:49.1) a couple of weeks ago so we were hoping he'd be really good tonight. He raced a half (mile track) last year in the Confederation Cup so we weren't expecting any problems and Randy gave him a perfect drive."

Which is more than could be said for Waples' drive to the track from Mohawk where he drove in both divisions of the Casual Breeze stake (two fourths) and then hopped in his car to make the trip to London.

"I left Mohawk at ten to nine and I had to be here at 9:40 so I knew I was going to be a little late but I figured I'd still be okay. Just when I got to Guelph it was just gridlock, everything was completely stopped because there was a lane closed on the 401.

"That took about 15 minutes and then the rain came and you could only do 100 km an hour (which actually is the speed limit). The whole time I'm texting Dr. Moore, saying ‘Woodstock', ‘Putnam,' ‘Ingersoll,'" indicating small towns along the route.

"(The trip in the race) really did work out well. I really had it in my mind to try not to leave with him, just try and keep him close because coming off a helmet he's a very dangerous horse and he showed it tonight.

"Foiled Again is a very deceiving horse. How many times have we seen him look like he's done in a race and then he just keeps on going? When I went three wide around Dougie I thought I was just going to clear both of them and suddenly here (Foiled Again) comes again.

"I can't say enough about the job Dr. Moore did getting him ready, he's only had a couple of races and he had to face the best pacing horses in North America and he just did a fantastic job and I'm just glad I got to drive him," added Waples who also took the time to thank all of the fans on hand to watch the track's biggest race of the year on a warm evening, which saw intermittent rain but a great crowd on hand.
