Exciting three-year-old Mattgregor is now racing the clock to be ready for the Queensland Derby next month at Albion Park.

Connections were again forced to scratch their talented pacer yesterday (Tuesday) owing to an unfortunate setback which occurred on Monday night.

The New Zealand bred gelding become cast in his box and ended up with a superficial wound on his hind leg which left connections with no option but to withdraw him from yesterday’s race.

“Luckily, he didn’t do any major damage but we weren’t prepared to start him although we need to get some racing under his belt quickly because the Derby classics are just around the corner. All going well, hopefully he’ll be right to go next week.” Trainer Chantal Turpin said.

It’s the second time in as many weeks that the speedy pacer has been scratched.

Since arriving from New Zealand late last year after being purchased from the stables of respected Canterbury horseman Mark Jones, Mattgregor has won three of his four starts to date.

All three victories coming at Albion Park and all in sub 1:54 time.

Mattgregor has not raced since winning at Albion Park on December 22 where he paced the mile in a scorching time of 1:53.4.

The Gr.1 $75,000 Queensland Derby is scheduled for July 16.

Connections are also mindful of the UBET Picket Fence bonus of $20,000 if he can win three races in a row including the Queensland Derby.
