In a fierce battle, the 7/10 favorite Timoko (6m Imoko-Kiss Me Coulonces-And Arifant) fought back bravely from apparent defeat and split rivals for a nose win in the Grand Prix du Sud-Quest at Hippodrome Beaumont de Lomagne. The 36th edition of this race (Gr. II UET Masters Series) carried a purse of 200,000 euro over the 2400 meter autostart course (1-1/2 miles).
Sanity (7g Love You-Flash Light), off at 2/1, burst off the car for Franck Ouvrie to gain immediate advantage and parked rival Timoko for most of the distance.
Coming offf the final bend Sanity appeared to be the winner and Timoko found the pylons some two lengths behind. Outsider Ru de L’Airou (8g Cygnus d’Odyssee-Cour d’Intheville) then appeared with a bold outside brush for Michel-X Charlot to battle alongside Sanity down the long stretch and inched past Sanity as the line approached.
However, Joseph Verbeeck and Timoko were not done. Timoko closed quickly on the leaders and Verbeeck steered him between rivals to win by a nose for trainer/owner Richard Westerink. Ru de L’Airou gained second by half-length over Sanity in a superb trotting contest of strategy and late finishing speed.
