West Melton based reinswoman Amanda Tomlinson experienced her most successful day in the sport of harness racing at Nelson during the weekend.

Tomlinson won the first race of the Nelson meeting with Charlie Kaos - That was probably expected seeing as the ultra consistent trotter was installed a $2.60 favourite, but what happened after that wasn't quite so foreseen.

The former New Zealand women's rugby player then combined with father Ken Ford again to double the dose in the second race with Little Mo ($9.40), who is a pacing half-brother to the immortal Lyell Creek.

It was Little Mo's first win at his 20th start but the win didn't come as too much of a surprise to Tomlinson.

"He is actually a nice enough wee horse, I had just been driving him upside down"

"I said to dad that I'm going to try something different with him today and drop straight down to the pegs, and in the end it worked out perfectly."

"It was a great thrill and my first ever driving double. The only time I'd done it beforehand was at the workouts," she added.

A treble then looked likely when Tomlinson powered up the inside with Rebma in race five, but unfortunately he galloped in the shadows of the post and ended up in second.

"That was probably my fault, I had let his over-check down a couple of holes to try and get him to stretch his neck out, and not race with his head so high and forgot to pull it back up."

Luckily for Tomlinson she was able to rectify this for the second day, and capped off what was a magical weekend with a win on Rebma on Sunday, who even after nearly winning on day one still somehow paid odds of $17.30.

Just for good measure, Charlie Kaos (Mark Jones) finished in second, giving Ken Ford the quinella.

"I own Rebma so I had to drive him, but if I had of had the option between him and Charlie (Kaos) I'm really not sure which one I would have gone for."

"Luckily I didn't have to make the decision and it all worked out well in the end," she added.

If Nelson wasn't Tomlinson's favourite track before the weekend it certainly is now.

"In the summer time we make it the family holiday and come up for a week and camp on course, so I am looking forward to doing that again in January."
