TOMORROW (Wednesday, October 23rd), Sydney harness racing fans, and their families and friends, are invited to a party for Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members and international godfathers of soul, R&B, doo wop and pop, The Drifters, who will celebrate their sixtieth anniversary at a gala luncheon and show, at Bankstown Paceway harness racecourse, as part of their Australian tour.
‘In the history of popular music, there are a few vocal groups who qualify as members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The Drifters are one of those groups – and have been an an ongoing musical institution since 1953,’ Bankstown Paceway director Andrew Ho told Harnesslink.
‘For the past sixty years, The Drifters have maintained a reputation as one of the world’s finest vocal groups – they linked 1950s R&B with 1960s soul and epitomized the vocal-group sound of New York,’ Mr Ho said.
‘Many members drifted in and out of the band since its beginnings. The first singer in a long line of lead voices, Clyde McPhatter, who came up with The Drifters’ name, and Ben E. King are just some of the great singers who have passed through the group,’ he said.
‘First auditioned by Mr McPhatter at the age of thirteen, Billy Washington now leads the group with whom he has toured for some five decades.
‘With Mr Washington is Wayne Foster, who has been with The Drifters for almost forty years, and newest member, Patrick Jackson, who spent the early part of his career performing with The Coasters.
‘Bankstown Paceway invites harness racing fans and music lovers to join us on Wednesday, October 23rd, when The Drifters, backed by an all star band, are destined to delight racecourse patrons with their hits, including Under the Boardwalk, Save the Last Dance for Me, Kissing in the Back Row, Like Sister and Brother, Spanish Harlem, This Magic Moment, Up on the Roof, There Goes My Baby and On Broadway,’ Mr Ho added.
The Drifters Sixtieth Anniversary Gala Luncheon and Show will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2013, at the heart of Australian harness racing, Sydney’s Bankstown Paceway, 178 Eldridge Road, Bankstown. To book the last few remaining seats, please call 1300 843 564 or 1300 THE LOG.
