The ever popular Cobram harness racing meeting situated on the Victorian/NSW border, raced on Wednesday January 16, with most races going to the nearby Shepparton area.

Kialla trainer/driver Geoff (Marto) Martin's trotter Monsieur Deville defeated the pacers in the Katunga Lucerne Pace for C0 class over 2170 metres.

Settling three back the markers from gate four with Earls Reign leading from gate two, Monsieur Deville was eased away from the inside to race in the open for the final lap, before outstaying his rivals to score from Earls Reign and Life Long Voyage (one/one last lap) in a rate of 2-00.2.

A 6-Y-0 gelding by Conch Deville from Smilin Eyes, Monsieur Deville has fronted the starter on 44 occasions for 7 wins.

Longlea trainer Glenn Sharp snared the John Brooks Memorial Trotters Handicap for T0 or better class over 2170 metres with Ganymede/On The Lips 6-Y-0 mare Le Chabanais, returning a rate of 2-05.5.

Driven by Nigel Milne, Le Chabanais settled at the tail of the field from a 20 metre backmark, before moving to be one/one racing for the bell trailing Salute The Wind.

Taken three wide approaching the home turn, Le Chabanais proved too strong at the finish for the pacemaker Starlight Lee, winning by a head on the wire, with Bold Simo 7.2 metre away in third place after following the leader.

Kialla trainer Laura Crossland and partner David Moran landed the De Maria Mitsubishi Pace for C0 class (mares) over 2170 metres with Modern Velocity, a 6-Y-0 daughter of Modern Art and Sibling Rivalry.

Trapped four wide from gate six as the start was effected, Moran pressed forward to assume control heading into the back straight on the first occasion and was never headed in defeating the hot favourite Chiquita Bromac which trailed, using the sprint lane to no avail in a rate of 1-59.3. Im For Real finished third after racing in the open from the bell.

On what was a huge day for the Goulburn Valley, Kialla's Dave Farrar was successful with 4-Y-0 Modern Art/Gangster Girl gelding Gangster Boy in the RACV Summer Cup for C3 & C4 class over 2170 metres.

Taking a concession for stable reinsman Riley Fortin, Gangster Boy began with a wing on every foot from gate three, leading throughout to score from the roughie Xmas In Manhattan which trailed and Ohoka Courage (one/one - three wide last lap), returning a mile rate of 1-57.3.

Yet another Kialla winner on the day was 4-Y-0 Our Sir Vancelot/Two Teds mare Twindet for Steve O'Donoghue in the Bakers Delight Pace for C1 class over 2170 metres.

Driven by the stable's Bec Bartley, Twindet led throughout from gate two, easily accounting for Venus Williams which raced outsider her for the last lap, with Life Savings (three back the markers) third. The mile rate 1-59.2.

Lemnos father and son - Russell & Nathan Jack made it two from two this time in with Art Major/Allfake 4-Y-0 mare Only A Copy who greeted the judge in the Michael Toohey Memorial Vicbred Pace for C1 class over 1670 metres.

Starting from inside the second line, Only A Copy settled four back along the markers momentarily, before moving to enjoy a one/one passage trailing Kentucky Lane.

Taken three wide on the final bend, Only A Copy ran home nicely to defeat Mumma Mia Lombo which trailed the weakening pacemaker and third placegetter Dicky Beach. The mile rate 1-56.9.

The highlight of the Ballarat fixture on Wednesday evening was the BHRA Ladies Committee Country Clubs Championship (1st Heat) for C4 & C5 class over 2200 metres.

Four extremely smart horses Metro Mike, Im Noddy, Barkers Hall and Amajorjoe were competitors in the race with the victor being ever reliable 4-Y-0 Metropolitan/Tuscan Skies gelding Metro Mike for local trainer Emma Stewart.

Bred and raced by Desleigh and David Parish from nearby Coghills Creek, Metro Mike driven by brother-in-law Mark Hayes led throughout from the pole, copping no pressure whatsoever from his rivals with Amajorjoe facing the breeze, Im Noddy (one/one) and Barkers Hall following the winner.

Given full reign on straightening, Metro Mike dashed clear in a last half of 56 seconds and final quarter a brilliant 26.8 to score from Barkers Hall and the rank outsider The Adriatic (three back the markers), returning a mile rate of 1-58.1.

It was Metro Mike's 10th victory in 21 race appearances.
