An under saddle race for Open trotters will be held on harness racing's big day - the 2012 Hambletonian Day - at The Meadowlands on , August 4. The purse will be $15,000, half of it put up by the track, the other half by Bluechip Farms, Winbak Farm, and Walnut Hall Ltd., each of which is contributing $2,500.
The race will be posted on The Meadowlands regular condition sheet for that week and entries taken by the race office.
Monte racing, as it is called in Europe, is extremely popular, most especially in Sweden and France, where the betting handle on Monte races is the equal to that of racing in harness. The Hambletoinan Monte race although, will be a non betting event.
All riders must have USTA riders’ licenses, which among other things requires each applicant to work a horse under saddle in 2:25 or better, off the gate, before the judges. The USTA has already issued 38 riders licenses, with a number of others now being processed.
In addition to the race at The Meadowlands, Monte races will also be held at Goshen, Freehold, Tioga, and Vernon.
The effort to popularize Monte racing in North America is spearheaded by Helene Gregory, wife of Jeff Gregory. Anyone wishing to have information about participating should contact Helene at firstname.lastname@example.org.
