A unique 'Sweet Sixteen Tournament' for $4,000 claimers gets under way Thursday night for mares at Maywood Park and Friday 'the boys' get their chance to compete. The 16 horses entered with the highest average earnings per start in 2008 square off in their respective divisions are eligible for the series.
The first four finishers in the filly division return next Thursday for the distaff final while the first four finishers in Friday’s sixth and seven races are back a week later for the male championship.
An $8,000 purse will be on the line in each Final, about two and one-half times the normal purse for $4,000 claimers on the circuit.
Friday’s sixth race 9-5 favorite Claudius Q is riding a three-race Balmoral winning streak and races at Maywood for the first time for the Mike Oosting stable.
The 14-year-old has won 29 races since Oosting acquired him in July of 2005. Among his challengers Friday is The Big Pooch (7-2, Brent Holland), winner of 3 of his last 4 starts.
