Unlocked (Kyle Husted) - Was all alone at the finish of Balmoral's Wicked Brew

Unlocked, a dominating winner in his first two career starts at Balmoral Park in a pair of ICF 2-year-old colt and gelding stakes, is favored to stay unbeaten in Friday's harness racing $12,000 Enzo The Baker at Maywood Park.

The Duneside Perch colt will not only be making his initial start on a half-mile track but he'll also be guided for the first time by National Hall of Fame driver Dave Magee when he bows for the Nick Prather stable.

Unlocked was hammered down to 40 cents on the dollar when he was an easy 1:56.1 winner in the June 9 Bingo Johnnie stake with Kyle Husted at his lines. One week later the colt was eight lengths the best in the Wicked Brew Stake, stopping the timer in a quick 1:53.3 mile with Husted.

"Unlocked has been has been phenomenal," said Husted. "I don't know if he's going to be this good all year but he has a chance to be among the best in his division. He's not eligible for a lot in his first season. He is staked to Springfield, Du Quoin and the Cardinal. We'll just see how it all works out."

I asked Husted what has impressed him about Unlocked this early in the colt's career.

"The horse is solid gaited." Kyle replied. "He covers the ground effortlessly and he doesn't drive like a green 2-year-old. He drives like an older horse. Unlocked paced that last mile of 53 and change like it was nothing. I've never sat behind a horse like him before. He could be something special."

Unlocked (p.p. 3) will be tested in his half-mile track debut by eight ICF freshmen when he opens as the 7-5 morning line favorite..

The first two posts will be manned by Fancy Creek Mitch (15-1, Dean Magee) and Sky Cam (20-1, Randy Crisler). From the four-slot to the eight are Wimpy Doodle (10-1, Art Gregory, Jr.), Tornado Henry (30-1, Kyle Husted), Fox Valley Nico (4-1, Casey Leonard), Cotton Eyed Joe (9-2) and Bloodbath McGrath (8-1, John De Long).

The Erv Miller's Sinful Vito (12-1, Mike Oosting), a $20,000 yearling purchase, starts in the second tier with the 9-slot in the sixth race feature.

Happy Ending: Mike's Price Shots delivered Stirling Bellagio in the 12th and last race Thursday night at a $16.20 winning mutuel.
