‘Frank The Tank’ has taken the SEW-Eurodrive Victoria Cup is stunning fashion from a tactically brilliant drive from Luke McCarthy.
Allowing Caribbean Blaster to drop in early in the race, McCarthy and For A Reason, secured a three wide cart into a race that was run frantically early.
The Gold Ace surprisingly flew across the field to find the top from Bitobliss and Smoken Up who hunted for the lead but was unable to cross.
Off the back Caribbean Blaster loomed up but For A Reason was quickly off his back as the other three wide runners, Beautide and Christen Me flashed him out wide.
The mile rate was completed in 1:53.8 with a 55sec last half. Caribbean Blaster held second from Christen Me with Beautide close up in fourth.
Luke McCarthy spoke following the race about how much the moment meant to him.
“This horse is probably the most special horse I’ve had. He got injured as a four-year-old and to come back at this level after standing at stud is amazing,” McCarthy said.
“All credit to the team at home, a big thanks to Yirribee Stud who jogged him up for three months and they are big fans of him.
“It worked out good, The Gold Ace went forward and he was entitled to hold the lead, if he had have got the lead early he would have been right there.
“I let Kate Gath in front of us on purpose because I thought he’d bring us into the race and he took us where we’d need to be.”
For A Reason has now won 24 from 35 in his first Group 1 success since the QLD Derby in 2010.
