The harness racing industry was saddened to learn of the passing of Cowra horseman Ken Smith.
Ken passed away on Wednesday afternoon after a lengthy battle with ill health, aged 80.
He had many great years in the sport as a hobby trainer and driver with many winners.
Ken learnt his horsemanship skills off his father Ossie Smith, who was one of the first drivers to win under lights at Harold Park when Moko Robert caused an upset at 50-1 at the official opening of night trotting.
Formerly based at Katoomba, some of Ken’s top performers included 1957 New South Wales Oaks winner Bangaroo Lass, Bangaroo Prince and What A Verdict just to name a few.
A funeral for Ken will be held on Friday December 16 at Cowra Anglican Church at 11am.
Harness Racing NSW extends its deepest sympathies to Ken’s family and friends.
