Caribbean Blaster has come from the widest second row draw to a cause a $30.40 harness racing upset in tonight's (Saturday December 15) Group One $400,000 Victoria Cup at Tabcorp Park Melton in Australia.

It was a hometown win for the Long Forest training and driving duo of Andy and Kate Gath.

The 5-year-old son of Bettor's Delight and Kalypso (Safely Kept) was the eighth favourite of 12, and simply had too much sprint for place-getters Mah Sish (Anthony Butt) and the $1.60 favourite Im Themightyquinn (Gary Hall Jr).

In fact it was ‘Quinny's' first loss after 11 consecutive wins. Ironically the last time he didn't win was in the 2011 Victoria Cup won by Smoken Up. That was run on December 17.

Smoken Up paced the 2240m mobile in 2:37.8 that night. Tonight Caribbean Blaster went 2:38.3.

Gath settled Caribbean Blaster last on the inside before getting a drag in the wide-wide train at the bell.

At the 400m Gath asked her charge to sprint - and wow he certainly did  that unleashing a final quarter sprint of 28.3 seconds.

The sprint was so good he flew past I Im Themightyquinn, as did Mah Sish who whipped along the markers late. Melpark Major and Alan Tubbs were fourth

Margins: 4.3 metres, 5.1 metres and 9.9 metres.

It was a race of many moves and the slashing mile rate of 1:53.7 reflected that. Lead time: 41.9. First quarter: 30 flat. Second quarter: 28.7. Third quarter: 29.2.

The quinella paid a whopping $41.40 and the trifecta $4,521.80. Not to forget the First Four which paid $64,545.80.

It was Caribbean Blaster's 20th win from 56 starts. He's also placed 25 times for $625,285.

The talented bay was a nice last start third behind Terrorway and Melpark Major in last Saturday's Cranbourne Cup.

Prior to that Caribbean Blaster ran ninth in the New Zealand Cup and fourth in the New Zealand Free For All - both at Addington Raceway on November 13 and 16.

The 2012 Victoria Cup winner is owned by R. J. Nalder and Alabar Bloodstock. He was bred by J. F. Hausfeld of New South Wales.
