Ontario-bred Western Graduate and driver Yannick Gingras got out in the nick of time and flew by Southwind Tempo and Me And My Baby to capture the $300,000 Jugette in a new two-heat World Record today at the Delware County Fair in Ohio.

ingras landed Western Graduate in the pocket spot behind Southwind Tempo (Tim Tetrick), who fought hard to maintain the front through an opening quarter in :25.4. Gingras was locked in while Liberty Skiberty (David Miller) and Me And My Baby (Dave Palone) both made unsuccessful attempts to get to the front through middle fractions of :54.2 and 1:22.4.

Coming around the final turn, Gingras managed to squeeze Western Graduate out and though for a second it looked like Me And My Baby would hang on to force a race-off, Gingras and Western Graduate powered past Southwind Tempo for the win in 1:51.3.

Western Graduate's first heat was timed in 1:51.2, which equaled the stakes, track and World Record set by Western Cruise in 2005, and with her 1:51.3 second heat she crushed the previous two-heat record of 3:44.3 by shaving three-fifths of a second off.

"This has been a nice filly and we've been chasing Southwind Tempo all year, who incidentally I sold at the Delaware sale for $3,500, so thank God I finally beat her," laughed jubilant trainer Mickey Burke in the winner's circle.

"Nine days from now, we go to the Sires Stakes final at Chester," he said of what's in store for Western Graduate next.

Me And My Baby finished second, with Southwind Tempo a close third.

With today's victories, Western Graduate now has a record of 16-6-5-1 for for owners Sylvia Burke, Thomas Cherichello, George Leon and Lawrence Karr. The daughter of Western Hanover-Country View Miss was bred by Ontario's Pat Ryan.
