The Gary Hall trained Elegant Christian can give those who are fascinated with the breeding of Standardbreds a night to remember in the $200,000 Sky Racing WA Derby on Friday night.
The gelding is bred on almost identical lines to the 2013 WA Derby winner Alta Christiano which gave trainer Gary Hall his first WA Derby win last year.
Both horses are sons of Christian Cullen and both are out of mares by sons of Cam Fella (out of mares by Albatross) and both have a grand-dam by a son of Albatross.
Victory to Elegant Christian would give Christian Cullen his third WA Derby success after the success of Alta Christiano in 2013 and In The Force in 2005.
Three sires in Alfred Donald, Sheik and Classic Garry have each sired four winners of the WA Derby and Christian Cullen would join King Oro as a three time winning sire.
King Oro’s three WA Derby winners were Jack Oro (1953), Bobbie Oro (1956) and King Aflame (1960). All three were out of different mares by Jack Potts that had been imported to Western Australia from New Zealand to improve bloodlines in this State.
