For nearly half a century, the New England Harness Writers Association have been promoting the sport of harness racing and honoring its achievers.

Sportswriters past and present like Sam Brogna, Cliff Sundberg, Ed Gillooly, Ralph Grasso, Bob Varey, Joe Vaccaro, Robert Temple, Tom Shehan, Ken Ward, Bill Stearns and yours truely, have kept the chapter going.

The chapter's most prestigious honor is its Hall of Fame "Board of Honor' which is housed in the main foya of the Plainridgeridge Racecourse.

To date, 45 names appear on the oversized plaque with two more to be added this fall.

Donald J. Richards and Ival R.Cianchette both of Maine, who have contributed nearly a century between them to harness racing and the industry in general, will be inducted into the writers 'hall at the 28th Hall of Fame Awards Program staged by the writers and the Cumberland, Maine Farmers Club on October 1, 2005 at the Cumberland Maine Fair Clubhouse.

Richards, who lives in Yarmouth, Maine. has been driving and training harness horses for 50 years.

He's considered a 'household name' in Maine's harness racing circles and is closing in on 4,200 career wins.

Cianchette, who resides in Falmouth, Maine, is a highly successful businessman , horse owner, and United States Trotting Association director since 1993 in the New England region.

He played a major role in developing the Maine Standardbred Breedeers and Owners Stake program.

Recognition awards will also be given to State Rep. Don G. Marean of Hollis, Maine, and to William L. Varney of Bangor, Maine.
