Top Oamaru-based junior driver Matthew Williamson experienced a massive thrill on the eve of his 23rd birthday (Thursday June 6) when notching up his 100th win for the season.

The milestone win came on the Terry & Glenys Chmiel trained Thrill, who gave Williamson just that by taking out the ninth race at Forbury Park.

Williamson went into the meeting sitting on 97 wins. But quickly increased that total by winning the opener with the Geoff & Jude Knight trained Cullens Finest, before upsetting in those same colours in race eight with Hezahotdude ($33.50).

In driving 100 winners in a season, Williamson becomes the first ever Otago/Southland based reinsman to do so.

The great achievement also makes him just the fourth junior to rein 100 in a season, joining Mark Jones, Zac Butcher and of course Dexter Dunn, who was the first person to shake Williamson's hand after the line.

After expressing his excitement with a flourish of the whip when crossing the line, Williamson returned to the clapping of the local crowd.

The treble of wins puts Williamson into third place in the national premiership, and right in contention of nabbing Ricky May for the silver medal.

As for the junior drivers' title, it's fair to say that is now in safe keeping.
