  • INSULT ME, BUT NOT MY PROPHET

Muslims from all walks of life, from all ethnic groups gathered on Sunday, 5th February 2006, at the bottom end of Queen Street, in the heart of Auckland, to protest the publishing of the satirical cartoons depicting Prophet Mohammad as a terrorist wearing a turban shaped like a bomb. With the reverberating chants of “ALLAHU AKBR –ALLAHU AKBR –Allah is the Greatest,” this protest march wound its way up Queens Street to Aotearoa Square. The loud echoes of ‘ALLAHU AKBER’ penetrated the empty high rise buildings and permeated the side streets attracting the side walkers and window shoppers to draw closer and witness this unusual event. Many observers dived for their cameras to record this historic occasion in Auckland.

  • Hospital of Hope - a Noble Venture

In war-torn Basra, the foundations of a paediatric hospital slowly rise signalling hope and comfort to nearly 1500 children stricken with thalassemia. This 400 square metre unit will comprise a wing in the Ibn Ghazwan Hospital, a facility named after an Arab philosopher, which caters for women and child patients in the southern Iraqi city of Basra. • SPIRITUAL ENCOUNTERS WITH ISLAMIC ARCHITECTURE
by Sr. Mahmudah Begum Jaffer *

Approaching a Mosque, one immediately becomes aware of the tranquility that the architecture offers. The polygonal bottom structure of the building represents the material world, while the dome, representing the spiritual world, calls out the possibility of change.

The Qur’anic calligraphy, which is often placed in between these two architectural structures, claims a unique implication. Sacred text is the ideal means of transition to spiritual freedom.

The Minaret stands tall, now due to modern sound technology, more a landmark than serving the purpose of calling devotees to prayer five times a day. Together with the dome it seems to remind one of man – man who really stands alone amongst many apparent changes. A spiral staircase reminds one that a search inward could ultimately be a spiritually uplifting experience.

  • Muhammaed (SAW) The Zam Zam Well

In the previous story we read that Abd al Mutallib took over the responsibility of looking after the needs of all the pilgrims who came to Makkah. As this was a desert area, water was in great demand by the many pilgrims who came to rest here from their long journeys to the north and south of Arabia.

There were a number of wells in and around this area but the supply of water was limited and could not satisfy the needs of all the visitors. As Abd al Mutallib and his eldest son, Harith were continuously on the look out for water, they started digging a number of wells in the area.

On the northwest side of the Kaabah was a semi-circular area called, Hijr Ismail because the tombs of Hajira and Ismail (alayhis Salaam) lay beneath these stones. Abd al Mutallib loved this area and he would quite often spread his bedding and sleep there. One night while sleeping, he heard a voice in his dreams say, “Abd al Mutallib uncover the well of the Zamzam. This will provide ample water for all the pilgrims visiting this holy shrine. The flow from this well will be continuous and not dry up.” He was startled at this but at first, chose to ignore it.

    Tafseer of the Qur'an

  • Al Ala –The Most High

This surah (chapter) was one of the favourites of the Prophet, because it turns the whole universe into a temple, echoing the praises of the Creator, the Most High. His love for this surah also stems from the fact that; The task of conveying HIS message and the path of warning people will be made simple and easy That ALLAH (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) has taken the responsibility that he will not forget anything of the Glorious Qur'an This surah includes the basic Islamic concept of life and existence, the unity of ALLAH (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala), the reality of divine revelation and the reality of reward and punishment in the life to come.

Let us have a closer look at the various ayat (verses) to pick up the theme and message of this surah. It starts with the Praises of the Lord, the fashioner of everything in creation, to the love of HIS messenger. It also embodies the promise of pleasant news for those who follow the right path, and warns of the painful results for those who turn their backs on this message, the same message that was revealed to Prophets, Ibrahim and Moosa –may peace be upon them.

As the Muslim world prepared to celebrate Eid-al-Adha, most of Pakistan’s earthquake survivors, left homeless and destitute after last October’s disaster, were struggling to participate in the important Islamic holiday.

But some displaced people in one of the worst affected areas did have something to celebrate thanks to special efforts by aid workers from international agency Oxfam. Millions of Pakistanis camped across the bitterly cold mountainous northern provinces were struggling to feed their families and clothe their children properly, let alone offer a sacrifice or receive donated meat.

  • Muhammad (Salalahu Alayhi Was Salam) His Background
We begin with the beautiful lessons of Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) the last and final Messenger from ALLAH (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala) to all mankind. His birth, life, his appointment as a Prophet, the revelations from Angel Jibraeel (Radiallahu Anhum) and the many trials and tribulations he experienced in his life are all very dear and important to a Muslim. We follow the ways of the Prophet very closely as he gave meaning to the many commandments and directions of the revelations. He was regarded as “the living Qur’an,” and also fulfilled the second half of the declaration of a Muslim, that is, “Muhammad is the messenger of GOD.”

Before we begin with the message that he brought to all mankind, it is important to sketch a picture of the Arabian surroundings, the people, the human activity and the thoughts and practices of the people at that time, to create the setting that this noble Prophet found himself in when he made his appearance and undertook the superhuman task of changing it for the better. Let us fill you in on this vital background before talking about the birth and life of Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam).

    Tafseer of the Qur'an

  • Al-Alaq -the blood clot

The first five ayat or signs of the CREATOR (Subhanahu Wa Ta'ala – glory be to HIM) of this surah (chapter) represents the very beginning of the revelation of the Glorious Qur'an. This was the first revelation received by Prophet, Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam – may peace and blessing be on him). The scene, the background and the spiritual vibrations of these first revelations are well known to the reader from the many biographies written on the Prophets or from the tafseer (meaning) of the Glorious Qur’an or even from the annals of history marking the very significant beginning of the revelation of the 114 surah (chapters) of the Glorious Qur'an. As this event marked the beginning of the revelations for approximately 23 years of the Prophethood of the Messenger (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam), we cannot ignore but reflect very briefly on this event, to establish and support the reality that this was one of the greatest episodes in the long history of human existence.

    Islamic Kindergarten

  • ISLAMIC KINDERGARTEN BY BAITUL-ILM TRUST (House of Learning)
The recently formed BAITUL-ILM TRUST (BIT -House of Learning) has been registered as a Charity by a few dedicated Muslim parents who see a great need for the establishment of an Islamic Kindergarten or Pre-school facilities. The 20,000 Muslims living in and around Auckland do not have a single Islamic Kindergarten or Child Care centre.
“We are now in the process of establishing this facility to accommodate the needs of Muslim children between the ages of 3 to 5. At present Muslim children of this age either do not attend a Pre-school or if they do, it will be a non-Islamic one. In most of the established Muslim Ummah around the world they have had the experience of the tremendous benefits of these centers,” said Br. Rafiyudin, the Chairman of BIT.

    South Pacific Islamic Centre

  • SOUTH PACIFIC ISLAMIC CENTRE
We were very impressed with the architectural picture of the South Pacific Islamic Centre, which is presently under construction at 91 Westney Road, Mangere, Auckland. Its close proximity to the airport will reassure visiting Muslims of the presence of the Ummah in New Zealand and could also be used as a point of contact to other Muslim individuals or organisations.

  • QUR'ANIC CALLIGRAPHY HAS BECOME AN ART
It is the ultimate in Islamic Art. The Divine revealed words of the Qur’an that were recited by Beloved Prophet Muhammad (Sallalahu Alayhi Wa Sallam - Peace be upon him), are now graphically displayed in exquisite calligraphy. Just gazing at it gives one a sense of peace and tranquility. An internationally acclaimed Islamic calligrapher, Br. Rasheed Butt, finds even the sound of his pen moving across the page (to create yet another sacred text art piece) to be a soothing and calming experience.
Because Muslims have been prohibited by the Prophet of Islam (May peace be upon him) to draw faces, or anything animate, their representation of the Sacred Words of The Noble Our'an would be illuminated by means of different painting techniques, or shading, or patterns. Their passion for beautifying these written words stem from a need to express deep love and gratitude for the Divine Revelation and also to record feelings of humility and awe in the Presence of God's Word.

  • Islamic School in Hong Kong.
Through the kind services of Dr Ali Jing Jiang, a retired Muslim educationist, living in Auckland, we were able to visit the only Muslim School in Hong Kong. We were dropped off by the taxi at the doors of the Islamic Kasim Tuet Memorial College, in the suburb of Chaiwan to be welcomed and warmly received by Br. Yusuf Yu, the Principal of this Islamic College. After the usual exchange of greetings and well wishing we were seated in the comfortable lounge area of his office. Over a delicious cup of Chinese tea we commenced posing the many questions to learn more about this Islamic School, its structure, the services, training and guidance that it offers the pupils living in that area.
