Christian Cullen - Winning the 1998 New Zealand Trotting Cup Likemesiah - In full stide at Addington Raceway

Christian Cullen was a true champion on the racetrack and as we all know very well has continued that success in his breeding career.

The son of In The Pocket won seven group one races between 1997- 1998 including the 3yo NZ Sires Stakes Final and the NZ Round Up Individual.

Looking into the more major wins of Christian Cullen we remember the 1998 Miracle Mile.

He also collected the Auckland Cup, NZ Free For All and Bankstown's premier race in the Treuer Memorial.

But his biggest win came in the 1998 New Zealand Cup beating home the legendary Iraklis who also had to overcome a 10m handicap in that race.

Also in 1998 he won the Ashburton Flying Stakes and he also completed a win in the Cambridge Flying Mile (Group 2) in 1999.

In his five Australian starts he finished with three wins in the Treuer Memorial, Miracle Mile and the Air New Zealand Free For All in which Ricky May drove him.

The other two races which he contested on Aussie soil were the 2000 Hunter and Victoria Cups.

Ricky May drove him on both occasions where he finished eighth and third.

At the end of his career he had 31 starts for 22 wins, and four placings.

His fastest winning mile rate was 1:54.1 and he collected over $1.2 million in prizemoney.

In all his career was a huge boon for the industry.

Standing at Wai Eyre Farm in Christchurch, Darryl Brown and his team take care of the son of In The Pocket.

After he finished his racing career he came to the 600 acre farm straight away in 2000.

Being there six years now Christian Cullen has produced some marvellous horses.

In his first season at the farm he served 67 mares and for the next three years he served 120-160 mares each year.

Now that the horse that produces the "Cullen Factor" is all settled, he serves up to 250 mares each year.

At the 2006 PGG Wrightson Sale Of Stars Christian Cullen sold 73 yearlings for an average of $57,585.

In the top 10 leaderboard for that yearling sale Christian Cullen had 9 of the highest priced yearlings.

Included was a filly out of Spirit Of Beth who topped the charts selling for $210,000.

1. Born Again Christian who has had nine wins from 27 starts.

2. Conte De Cristo who took Victoria by storm and was a hot contestant for last years Kilmore Cup.

3. Classy Cullen who was out of Smooth Paula.

4. Gotta Go Cullen who finished fourth in this year's (2006) Breeders Crown.

5. Secretagent Cullen who finished sixth in the 2006 Chariots Of Fire.

6. The beautiful mare in Molly Darling was also another of Christian Cullen's daughters. She won the 2005 Breeders Crown in her respective section and competed hotly in this years racing.

7. Likemesiah, Roman Gladiator and Dudinka's Cullen were also very honourable sires of Christian Cullen.

8. Of Course who can forget Mainland Banner who has been said to be the best mare on the planet by some experts. Becoming the first 4yo mare to win the NZ Trotting Cup this year setting the world on fire.

As a stallion Christian Cullen to date has had 201 Australian live foals and 370 live foals world wide (including Australia).

He has had 141 individual winning horses world wide which he has sired.

The highlight of Christian Cullen's Breeding Career so far I would think would be the NZ Trotting Cup day of this year (2006) where Christian Cullen sired four winners including the main race winner in Mainland Banner.
