As we head towards nomination time for next year’s Australian Pacing Gold’s (APG) Yearling Sales, Chairman of APG, Robert Marshall, reflected on the contribution the sales company has made to Australian standardbred breeding and  harness racing. “APG is Australian focussed, always has been, always will be”, Marshall said. “Our mission is to provide the opportunity for standardbred breeders to offer their yearlings for sale in a market and for a Futurity event, where only Australian bred horses are offered and compete.” APG’s Futurity Series acknowledges the importance of the purchaser in the equation. While APG’s model originally focussed on a National 2YO Final, it now looks to provide the purchaser with the opportunity to earn across the States and for more than just the 2YO season. Marshall noted that, with the pressure on wagering revenues, impacted even more by the outbreak of COVID-19, owners will be looking to purchase a yearling where the likelihood of a return is enhanced by greater opportunity. The investment in a yearling is, for most purchasers, a leap into the unknown. Clearly some will not make it to the racetrack and some may not make it as a 2YO. APG’s Futurity Series provides the purchaser with a lot more in the way of opportunity than was available under the previous format. The purchaser is no longer competing for one pot of money - the State-based series provides Group racing in all east coast states as well as WA for 2yo and 3yo Colts and Fillies. Given the reduced prizemoney available across Australia, purchasers will have a keen eye on where they spend the discretionary dollar in 2021 and the likelihood of a return. On the suggestion that APG might open its books to NZ-Bred yearlings as is the case with Nutrien Ag’s proposed sale in 2021, Marshall was adamant: “APG is Australian owned for Australian bred.”

The Woodlands Stud flagship Bettor’s Delight was clearly the top harness racing sire on average price at this year’s round of Australian Pacing Gold yearling sales. Of the 35 head offered by the great Cam’s Card Shark horse, 31 were sold for an average of $60,484. He had four of the seven yearlings to fetch $100,000 or more including the three highest priced colts and the leading filly at the Sydney auction. Art Major, who sired the highest priced yearling in Melbourne at $160,000, Courage Under Fire and Captaintreacherous were the only other sires with stock to reach six figures. The deceased Courage Under Fire’s had four progeny sell for an average of $53,125 to finish second on the list. Next was Captaintreacherous, who had 30 of his second crop sell for an average price of $51,200, followed by his own sire Somebeachsomewhere (21 sold - $41,976 average), Mach Three (2 - $35,000), Sweet Lou (18 - $33,778) and Art Major (38 - $33,237). Always B Miki was the leading first crop sire with 30 head sold for an average of $28,189, followed by Betting Line (34 – $24,632) and Racing Hill (7 - $8,429). Muscle Hill topped the trotting sire’s section with two lots averaging $52,500. Other trotting stallions with multiple sales included Andover Hall (2 - $42,500), Father Patrick (4 - $36,875), Love You (2 - $33,250), Creatine (2 - $25,000) and Majestic Son (8 - $20,938).   PACING A half-brother to the harness racing Breeders Crown champion Hurricane Harley and half-sisters to the APG Final and Breeders Crown winner Follow The Stars and the Victoria Derby and dual Breeders Crown champion Our Little General will spearhead the Northern Rivers Equine draft at the Australian Pacing Gold sale at Oaklands Junction on Sunday, February 2. Northern Rivers Equine, Kyabram, the home of American Ideal, Mel Mara and Yankee Rockstar, will present 13 yearlings – four colts and nine fillies – on behalf of clients Lauriston Bloodstock, Greg Fleming and Phil and Tracey Wade. Bill and Anne Anderson’s Lauriston Bloodstock, the dual Victorian Breeders of the Year and whose stock have won 25 Group 1 races to date, have nominated eight superbly bred yearlings – two colts and six fillies. Their consignment includes a Somebeachsomewhere colt from the APG Final winner Musical Delight (Lot 171); a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to Our Little General and Kasbah Kid (Lot 153); an Art Major half-brother to Hurricane Harley and Mango Stride (1:50.9) as Lot 230; a Captaintreacherous half-sister to Follow The Stars and APG runner-up Stefsbest (Lot 222); an Art Major sister to the Victoria Sapling winner Abouttime and half-sister to the speedy None Bettor (1:48.8) as Lot 158; a Sweet Lou filly out of the Breeders Crown champion Glenferrie Shuffle (Lot 122); a Bettor’s Delight half-sister to three in 1:56 including Rocknroll Icon (Lot 189); and an American Ideal filly from the Group 3 placegetter Artistic Angel (Lot 73). Swan Hill breeder-owner Greg Fleming, who bred and raced the former top racemare Helen’s Bonus, is selling at the APG for the first time. Fleming has nominated two progeny of the champion American juvenile and now leading sire Captaintreacherous. Lot 127 is a colt out of the McArdle mare Glitterazzi, a half-sister to millionaire pacer Bling It On and the Miracle Mile winner Baby Bling, while Lot 68 is a filly from the prolific WA and USA winner Arctic Fire, a half-sister to the NZ 2YO Filly of the Year Classy Filly. Kyabram breeders Phil and Tracey Wade, who bred, raised and sold the Group placegetter Dee Double You at the 2017 APG sale, have a three-prong draft at this year’s sale. They are offering a grand looking filly from the first crop of world champion Always B Miki that is a half-sister to Dee Double You and hails from the family of crack racemares Louvre and Miss Hazel, as Lot 148. The Wade’s other two yearlings are both by A G’s White Socks’ sire, the great Rock N Roll Heaven. Lot 204 is a half-brother to Philtra Phella, a winner of 20 races in Victoria and Tasmania and almost $100,000, while Lot 235 is a daughter of the Somebeachsomewhere mare Somesorta Philtra, a half-sister to Dee Double You. Bill Ellis, Club Menangle Executive Director and one of the Club’s appointed Directors to the Australian Pacing Gold (APG) company, has highlighted the fantastic opportunities available to race age-based harness racing horses in New South Wales. Bill’s vast experience in harness racing is respected across Australasia. Bill is a doyen of harness racing reporting in Australasia. Bill has told Harnesslink the changes made to the APG format via this year’s sales, provide an outstanding opportunity to race horses, particularly in age-based Group races in the Premier State. Over recent months APG has consulted with owners, vendors and trainers on the future of the APG Race Series. A massive 75% of respondents (clear by any means), voted to move away from the APG National Series format. Accordingly, a new State-based Series will be introduced from this year’s APG Sales. Across Australia the APG series will offer 32 Group Races per season across the 2yo, 3yo and 4yo age groups. Bill was particularly excited by the fact purchaser at the Sydney APG Sales will not have to travel interstate for the series. That’s unless they want to do so. NSW Breeders Challenge bred horses purchased through the sales will have a delectable choice of opportunities here in NSW and Club Menangle will be doing everything in its power to increase opportunity and interest. Afterall, Tabcorp Park Menangle is the fastest and largest racing circuit in the Southern Hemisphere and we want to showcase the standardbred at its best. Club Menangle looks forward to hosting the NSW APG Series where the age-based and separate sex races will include: 2yo Finals of $125,000 3yo Finals of $125,000 4yo Finals of $50,000 But wait, there’s more. NSW and Victoria will each host an End Season Series for 2yo and 3yo Divisions, featuring $30,000 Finals. Club Menangle has worked hard with the State’s regulator, HRNSW to provide participants with increased opportunities at country, metropolitan and Group meetings. Bill noted that without the leadership of HRNSW, opportunities available in NSW would not be possible. Accordingly, NSW will have a plethora of Group racing available across the State in 2020. Kicking off in March is the cornerstone race series, the Bathurst Gold Crown. Universally accepted as the first test for 2yos in Australia. The series features separate 2yo and 3yo Group 1 races. Oh, and the $1m Ainsworth Miracle Mile in March - and the Sky Carnival of Miracles packed with nine Group 1 races to boot! Next up will be the first running of the 4yo and 5yo NSW Breeders Challenge eligible Group 1 races at Riverina Raceway, Wagga Wagga in April. Separate racing for the boys and girls at $100,000. Let’s not forget the first ever running of the $1m Pace at Tabcorp Park Menangle in May! June heralds the Finals of the NSW Breeders Challenge separate sex races for the 2yo and 3yo eligible youngsters. The 2yo races worth $125,000 and the 3yo races worth $150,000. It does not end there, Bill noted next-up it’s Christmas in July! July will see the Finals of the NSW Breeders Challenge True Blue Series Finals worth $50,000 and funded by Club Menangle. This series is for NSW Breeders Challenge eligible horses which were sired by stallions standing in NSW and mares served in NSW. But wait, there is still more! We forgot the steak knives. HRNSW will host the Regional Finals for 2yo and 3yo NSW Breeders Challenge eligible horses at Newcastle Paceway. Separate sex races at Group 2 level worth $50,000. And if that’s not enough, it’s on to the Breeders Crown program in Victoria to wind-up a year of excitement, records and interest in harness racing. With some exciting yearlings being presented at the APG Sales across Australia, Bill figures our North American cousins will be looking at the opportunity, the exchange rate and the value available down-under. Premier Kiwi trainer Tim Butt was looking to the future in making the leap from New Zealand to Menangle last year – and his latest crop of yearling purchases is now providing prospective owners with the same opportunity. Team Butt was buzzing with excitement at some of the top-line babies they secured at the recent APG sales, and settling the youngsters in to their state-of-the-art surrounds has only boosted their confidence. “We’ve had terrific early interest from owners because these youngsters are beautifully-bred, but a share in them is still very affordable,” Tim said. “But they’ve settled in well, they’re smart and we’re really keen about the potential of all of them,” he said. The babies will certainly get their best chance to produce the goods. Tim Butt has trained more Grand Circuit Winners than any other trainer in Australasia, including champions such as great Lyell Creek and My Field Marshal (who currently holds the Australasian record of 1:46.9 in his 2018 Miracle Mile Victory). “We think these four yearlings represent some of the world’s best stallions and Down Under's best mares, and we’re hoping the affordability of an interest will attract new clients, potentially even international clients, to enjoy the thrill of harness racing in Australia,” Tim said. A MASSIVE performance in defeat coupled with an almost perfect season will see Patrickthepiranha’s younger sibling attract plenty of attention during Sunday’s Australian Pacing Gold Sale in Perth. Winner of his first seven starts for the term, Patrickthepiranha finished third at Gloucester Park yesterday in what was an impressive run after dragging a flat tyre. By highly-successful sire Four Starzzz Shark, Patrickthepiranha is from Thats The Spirit which boasts a perfect record from four starters. Thats The Spirit’s latest offering is a colt by Rock N Roll Heaven, which is set to enter the ring as Lot 620. The family includes Il Vicolo, Gotta Go Cullen, Stunin Cullen, Chilli Palmer, Veste, Jinni’s Fantasy, Fake Spirit and Niketia. Also an APG graduate, Patrickthepiranha is being primed for next week’s Sales Series Final by trainer Colin Brown, who played a role in naming the gelding. “The boys were at the stable one morning talking about Lennytheshark,” Brown explained. “Lenny, which is also by Four Starzzz Shark, had just run an enormous race the night before and they were crowing about him. “This bloke’s stable name at the breeder’s place was Patrick and as a throwaway line I said ‘don’t worry about Lennytheshark we’ve got Patrickthepiranha’. “The boys loved it and went with it. So I guess in some way he is named after Lenny!””   APG Media

UP, UP and away (hopefully to the winners’ circle) is the best way to describe the results of last weekend’s Ladbrokes Australian Pacing Gold Sale in Brisbane. With a tremendous depth in quality yearlings on offer, the sale’s average increased, gross turnover is up and interstate interest was at a level never seen before! The lots averaged $18,593 which represents an increase of eight per cent on the previous year, while gross turnover is up four per cent on 2018 – a figure which is set to rise during the coming fortnight as buyers purchase some of the lots which were passed in. New South Wales buyers were the most active with more than half the sold lots heading south. Prominent horseman Tim Butt purchased the top priced colt and filly for a combined total of $91,000. Butt parted with $55,000 for a son of Captaintreacherous and Forever Gold and $36,000 for Roll With Joe and Save Me Christian’s daughter. “The most pleasing aspect of Sunday’s Sale was our ability to attract interstate buyers,” APG General Manager David Boydell said. “They were all keen to take advantage of the additional earning opportunities available to Brisbane Sale horses courtesy of APG’s $100,000 Albion Park Sales Race and the outstanding QBred For Life bonus scheme. “Over 50 per cent of all sales were to New South Wales buyers, headed by the likes of Tim Butt, Robbie Morris, Josh Farrugia, Chris Frisby and Tumby Park, whilst Matt Craven was also active, purchasing one and missing out on a couple of others. “Overall, it was a really positive start to the sales season. There was good money available for quality horses, and this was reflected in both our sales averages and our gross turnover. “Looking forward to next year, we would like to look at ways to generate more buying activity from local owners and trainers, and we probably also need to work through a few issues with the reserves, because there were a few horses this year that had reserves on them that were higher than I’d like to see and which would have exceeded many buyers expectations.” A list of results, including a list of those passed and their reserves, is available on the APG website by clicking here Anyone wishing to place an offer on a passed in Lot can do so by clicking on the “Make An Offer” link on the results page, or by phoning John Coffey on 0418 500 211. One person’s misfortune could be your good fortune during Sunday’s Ladbrokes Australian Pacing Gold Sale. Originally looking to sell several yearlings during APG’s Sydney Sale last February, Tony Peacock missed the opportunity due to a harness racing track accident which almost claimed his life. Working a two-year-old around his Moama property just before Christmas, Peacock was catapulted from the sulky before landing vertically on his head. As a result of the impact Peacock broke his neck between his C2 and C3 vertebrae. After arriving at hospital – having been flown by helicopter to Melbourne – doctors explained Peacock was lucky to be alive as his damage was in the same position you would hang someone because the break in that spot stops the individuals nerves and breathing. Although still struggling through the long recovery process, Peacock will have five yearlings enter the Oaklands Junction sale ring. Listed as Lots 603B, 604B, 605B, 606B and 607B, the line-up consists of three colts and two fillies. One of the colts, Lot 603B is a Tintin In America-An Angel Divine brother to last season’s quality freshman, Divine State. Of the fillies, Lot 606B - by Auckland Reactor - comes from the same family as A G Hunter Cup winners Blossom Lady and Mister D G. APG Media

Australian Pacing Gold’s Ladbrokes Western Australia Sale has been declared a success. Not only did the average sale price rise by 11 per cent on last year, gross turnover increased by just under six per cent. In what is regarded as the benchmark of a good sale, the clearance rate was slightly more than 80 per cent. What is interesting to note is locally-sired yearlings averaged $9900 compared to their east coast and New Zealand counterparts, which attracted an average bid of $17,781. There was also a notable difference in the clearance rate, with locals going out at 72 per cent compared to 83 per cent from ‘outsiders’. “As usual, I was really impressed with the level of preparation and presentation by our Perth vendors,” APG’s General Manager David Boydell said.  “Not only did they present their horses in outstanding condition, but the effort that vendors like Mike Hackett, Kevin & Kody Charles and others put into beautifying their stabling area with flowers and the like really sets the standard for the industry. “Like all of APG’s vendors, our Western Australian vendors are really passionate supporters of the industry, so it was really pleasing buyers rewarded their efforts, with good prices available for the top lots.  “However, equally importantly, the sale benefited from gains at all levels, with the average prices of the bottom 25 per cent of horses up by around 10 per cent, whilst the median price was also up by 10 per cent on the prior year. “ As has been the case in recent years, Ross Waddell’s Pacing WA was a major player, purchasing numerous quality lots, which will be made available in shares of 10 per cent or more.  The Pacing WA syndicates have enjoyed enormous success in recent seasons, winning a host of Group races, including multiple editions of the Group One Perth Sales Classics.  As such, they represent an ideal choice for anyone looking to experience the thrill of harness racing without breaking the budget.  For those seeking further information relating to Pacing WA Syndicate it can be obtained by e-mailing pacingwa@bigpond.com APG Media

Including a national record, Sunday’s Australian Pacing Gold Ladbrokes Melbourne Sale produced some pleasing results. By premier stallion Art Major from Group One producing dam Smyrna Duruisseau, Lot 223 was sold for a whopping $160,000. The youngster not only fetched $60,000 more than the second highest lot, it was also an APG record price for a filly. With four winners from five starters, Smyrna Duruisseau is the dam of 2017 APG champion Follow The Stars and last season’s talented freshman, Stefsbest. Follow The Stars’ career was cut short after 29 starts – which netted 19 wins and nine placings for earnings of $707,237 – with the stallion standing at stud in Western Australia. Interestingly, Follow The Stars will be represented by two colts and a filly at APG’s Perth Sale on March 4. Melbourne’s highest priced colt was Lot 65, a son of Mach Three and feature winning mare Bettor Give It. “Overall, I’m pleased with our Melbourne Sales results,” APG’s General Manager David Boydell said. “Attendance and buyer registrations were both very strong, and there was plenty of demand across most sectors of the market, particularly the middle market, which is reflected in the high clearance rates that we’ve achieved. “Also pleasing was the strong demand for the fillies, with their sale average up by around 10 per cent on the previous year, with a clearance rate up by more than seven-and-a-half per cent.” With the recent Brisbane sale also enjoying an increase in sales and clearance rates, the upcoming Sydney sale is predicted to attract some spirited bidding. Scheduled for February 25, the sale includes 200 impeccably-bred yearlings. “A number of buyers have also commented on the obvious strength of the Sydney catalogue and indicated they were careful not to go too hard in Melbourne because they’re keen to be active in Sydney,” Boydell said. “Especially with the added attraction of the shift to Inglis’ amazing new sales complex at Warwick Farm.” APG Media

A regally bred harness racing filly from the Lauriston Bloodstock operation set a new fillies’ record at the Melbourne Australian Pacing Gold Sale today. The daughter of Alabar’s headline act, Art Major, out of Smyrna Duruisseau pulled $160,000 to become the 2018 ‘topper’ and the highest priced filly ever at an APG sale. The bidding was hot for Lot 223 at the famous Inglis Sales Complex and she fetched $60,000 more than any other yearling for the day. Smyrna Duruisseau was no star on the track, but her breeding barn career was off to a flyer via Follow The Stars – the brilliant 2014 $322,000 Australian Pacing Gold Final and $297,000 Australasian Breeders Crown champion, who went on to win 19 races from 29 starts for over $700k in prizemoney. And this filly is a full-sister. A Nixon Bloodstock prepared and bred colt, a stunning son of Mach Three out of Bettors Delight mare Bettor Give It, was the second-highest priced yearling to go under the gavel today. He went for $100,000, while Benstud Standardbreds prepared the third and fourth highest priced youngsters, two colts – a Sportswriter-Mendelico half-brother to Heaven Rocks snaring $92,500 and a Well Said-Beninjurd relation to Philadelphia Man $77,500. Bling It On’s ($1.6 million in prizemoney so far) full-brother rounded out the top five today at $72,500, the son of American Ideal-Alldatglittersisgold having no shortage of admirers.
