OUR Uncle Sam, the surprise packet of the Melbourne Inter Dominion Championships and who finished runner-up in the Grand Final, has provided a timely boost for the Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale. The Sportswriter gelding, who has banked $236,876 from 16 wins and 11 placings in 53 starts, was knocked down for a modest $3,500 at the 2015 Bathurst sale. Bred in Victoria by Neville Ismaili, of Ashdon Valley Racing, Undera, Our Uncle Sam is out of the lightly raced Rooftop Fairy, a Village Jasper half-sister to eight winners including the Northern Region Championship winner Smoothers ($107,065). Our Uncle Sam is the third foal and the only progeny of Rooftop Fairy to have raced so far. The 2019 Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale will be conducted by Graeme Board & Company at the Gold Crown Paceway on Sunday, March 24 and has attracted more than 115 nominations.   Peter Wharton

A record average price and a high clearance rate were the salient points of the very successful Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale held at the Bathurst Showground last Sunday. The overall average for the harness racing 76 lots sold was $10,240 with the colts averaging $11,650 and the fillies $9,000. The sale grossed $778,250 and the clearance rate was over 75 per cent. The top price of $36,000 was shared by two fillies, one by emerging sire Shoobees Place from the 1:56 Art Major mare Tick The Boxes NZ, offered by Maitland studmaster Paul Carmody, and the other an Art Major filly out of the Blissfull Hall mare Ark Elaine (1:57.7), consigned by Parkes breeder Tony Dumesny. The highest price paid for a colt was $32,000 for the brown colt by first crop sire Sunshine Beach out of the $104,000 winning Jet Laag mare Gloria Lombo, also offered by Tony Dumesny. A colt by Shoobees Place from the 1:56 Modern Art mare Lavish Art, offered by the Carmody’s Lochend Stud, was knocked down for $30,000. Auctioneer Graeme Board was delighted with the sale. “The horses were presented well and there was a strong benchmark of buyers. Overall, it was a very good result,” Mr Board said.

It took to Lot 125 of the 129 yearlings offered at Sundays harness racing sale at the Bathurst Show grounds to find the highest priced lot and it went to a striking filly by Aces N Sevens from the very successful New Zealand bred Holmes Hanover broodmare in Scent who made $36,000. Scent was a very smart racemare on the track herself taking a mark of 1:57.9 and earning $122,082 and has already produced nine winners from her first eleven foals including such standout types as Makes Every Scents 1:55.1 ($211,025) and Governor Art 1:58.6 ($189,250) so Lot 125 will have a lot of residual value once her career on the track is over. The second highest price for a yearling on the day was Lot 43 who made $26,000. She is a daughter of the elite sire Art Major from a Aces N Sevens half sister to six winners including the former star Queensland pacer in Rollon Bigred 1:55.3 ($343,903) and a full sister to two winners including Twograndahand 1:58.6 ($89,784). The third highest price of the Bathurst Yearling Sale was also a filly. This one was by Four Starzzz Shark from a Safely Kept daughter of the talented racemare Blue Sage 1:59.2 ($71,057) Not only has she left seven winners at stud to date including such smart types as Antigua Bay 1:56.7 ($161,159) and Marbles 1:58.5 $140,314) but Blue Sage is also a full sister to the outstanding age group performer in Blue Eagle 1:58 .5 ($157,229) and a half sister to another star in Khans Thunder 1:59 ($257,404) The top five priced yearlings were rounded out by colts from Courage Under Fire and the first season sire Auckland Reactor, both  of which sold for $21,000 . The Courage Under Fire colt is the first foal from the very smart Northern Luck mare in Edna Anne 1:55.4 ($105,811). Edna Anne is a half sister to the talented The Dies Cast 1:57 ($228,250) while her dam Anne Of Avonlea ($50,904) was a handy race mare herself. The surprise packet of the sale was the performance of the first season sire in Auckland Reactor. His top priced lot was Lot 76 and it was a beautifully bred individual. A colt son of Auckland Reactor, Lot 76 was a half brother to three winners including Lord Lombo 1:56 ($216,513) The second dam Decethree left eleven winners with seven in 2:00 including the outstanding Lombo Skyrider 1:50 ($841,611) and Lombo Cloud Nine 1:55.3 ($102,370) The third dam was the brilliant race filly Misty Maiden 1:59.4 ($245,449) who left nine winners at stud including the champion pacer Lombo Pocket Watch 1:53.6 ($1,552,638). A great pedigree for a smart looking colt. The other two Auckland Reactors made $16,500 and $11,500 which must have put a big smile on the Alabar Management team. To average $16,333 at the Bathurst Gold Crown Sale is a great achievement and has the son of Mach Three away to a great start.   Lot Sex Brand Foaling Date Colour Sire Dam Purchaser  Price  1 FILLY The first crop of yearlings by the harness racing superstar Auckland Reactor have hit the yearling sales throughout Australasia over the last six weeks and have been very well received by buyers on both sides of the Tasman. Mark Purdon has no sentimentality at all when it comes to buying horses, often overlooking close relatives of horses that have been superstars for the All Stars barn. Therefore to see Mark purchase three Auckland Reactors at the yearling sales in New Zealand was a very positive endorsement of the son of Mach Three as Mark Purdon is widely regarded as the best judge in the yearling sales market in Australasia. Today at the Bathurst Gold Crown Sale at the Bathurst Showgrounds, Auckland Reactor has three yearlings for sale and we will do a quick review of all of them. LOT 75 - Colt by Auckland Reactor from The Warp Legacy by Legacy Of Power The dam is a half sister to a former topliner in The Warp Drive 1:56.7 ($464,971) and she is from a very strong New Zealand family in Norice. This branch of the Norice family has been incredibly strong over the last 40 years and continues to produce elite level juveniles season after season who go on to be stars as aged horses. Two of the latest would be Caesars Folly 1:52.4 ($350,335) and O' Baby 1:54.8 ($333,034) and another three year old close up in this pedigree in Code Black 1:54.8 ($79,082) looks to have a very bright future. LOT 76  - A colt by Auckland Reactor from the Northern Lights mare in Lady Lara Lombo($51,120) The dam Lady Lara Lombo already has already produced three winners including  Lord Lombo1:56 ($211,961) and she is a half sister to ten winners including the outstanding Lombo Skyrider 1:50 ($841,611) The third dam is none other than the former Australian Broodmare Of The Year in Misty Maiden who is the dam of course of Lombo Pocket Watch 1:53.6 ($1,522,638) and the grand-dam of Suave Stuey Lombo 1:49.6 ($598,332) As a maternal family on a pedigree page it just doesn't read any better than Lot 76 and he should be keenly sought after by buyers. LOT 77  -  A colt by Auckland Reactor from the Panorama mare Aldebaran 1:55.6 ($154,289) The first foal from Aldebaran in The Hairy Huntsman 2:00.8 has already won three races to date so the mare is on her way in the broodmare barn. Aldebaran was a high class racemare in her own right and was a half sister to another speedy mare who raced in Queensland in Rodandthe Nights 1:55.4 The third dam Casino Wiper produced another very talented type in Play The Line 1:56.8 ($133,360) who won the Queensland Triad at four (Group 2). His pedigree page is not in the same league as that of Lot 76 but it has shown the ability to leave $100,000 winners which is a big plus. There are two other yearlings by first season sires in the Bathurst Gold Sale. LOT 119  -  A filly by We Will See 1:47.4 ($2,553,948) from the Artiscape mare I'M Off Limits. I'm Off Limits only has four foals old enough to race and has produced three winners to date including the high class race filly in Sally Fletcher 1:56.1 ($92,690) The grand dam Miss Burnside comes from a prolific New Zealand family which is noted for producing elite level fillies and mares. As you can see on the pedigree page another elite level filly in Carpenters Daughter 1:56.1 ($293,378) is closely related to Lot 119 LOT 28 -  A colt by Smiling Shard from the race winning Sports Town mare in Mylady Tess This colt is only the second foal produced by Mylady Tess who is a half sister to nine winners including such standout types as Heathbern Diamond 1:55.4 ($201,830), Turbo Tyson 1:56.4 ($143,527) and Mac Strike 2:00.6 ($126,195) to name just three. With all those winners up close in his pedigree, you would imagine that lot 28 has a big chance of adding to the great record his maternal family have established in the last 25 years Harnesslink Media

Tomorrows Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale at the Bathurst Showgrounds is quite different to most of the other sales held throughout Australia each season. Most of the other sales have a heavy emphasis on the top end of the market where $50,000 yearlings become quite common. The best of the best breeding wise change hands but there is no guarantee they will be the best on the racetrack. The average trainer - driver and owner are shut out in the main at these sales and it is left to companies like Graeme Board to fill the gap in the market by running sales such as the Bathurst Gold Crown. This weekends catalogue is a great example of having yearlings to fit everyone's budget with all the elite sires represented along with stallions just getting established or having their first crop being sold this year. Courage Under Fire is enjoying a great run on both sides of the Tasman at the moment and he has six entries in tomorrows sale. The pick of them for us is Lot 82 which is being offered on behalf of Tony Dumesny. He is a colt from the former top racemare Edna Anne 1:55.4 ($105,811) and is her first foal. The second dam takes most of the pedigree page so he is very hard to fault on paper. Four Starzzz Shark is always great value for money at the yearling sales and tomorrow at Bathurst should be no exception. He has seven representatives in the sale and we think all seven have something to offer the buyers bench. All of them have plenty of well performed relatives close up on the pedigree page and anyone who has seen Lennytheshark or Frith dominate this season on the track is aware of the quality that Four Starzzz Shark can produce. Modern Art is another stallion who under sells at a lot of sales in Australia and it is a mystery to us why that is. He is closing in on 400 winners in Australia alone and stake earnings in excess of $14,440,000, yet he doesn't quite get the sale results his record would suggest he deserves. He has four yearlings in tomorrows sale and all have a touch of quality about them. Lot 51 appeals to us a lot as the colt for sale is the first foal from a full sister to the very smart Bo Jasper 1:57.9 ($168,436)  Aces N Sevens continues to churn out the winners to the point he now has over 305 on his card with stakes closing in on $13,500,000. He has twelve yearlings in tomorrows sale and they cover a wide cross section of mares but there should be something for everyone pockets amongst the twelve on offer. People tend to forget that Aces N Sevens has produced such stars as Excel Stride 1:50.3 ($769,464), Drumfire 1:49 ($628,739), Ananz 1:53.8 ($527,844) and Lettucerocku 1:52.6 ($489,004) to name just a few and there are bound to be some smart horses amongst a draft of twelve yearlings from such a proven sire With Rock N Roll Heaven having a handful of entries alongside Art Major (3), Roll With Joe (4) and Sportswriter(4), the elite sires are well represented but just maybe the value may come from the sires we have highlighted in this article. The 2016 Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale will be conducted by Graeme Board & Company at the Bathurst Showground on Sunday, starting at 11am. The sale comprises 129 lots by 39 different sires including four-time leading juvenile sire Art Major and premiership-winning stallions in Sportswriter, Village Jasper, Armbro Operative and Aces N Sevens. Other well known stallions include Four Starzzz Shark, American Ideal, Courage Under Fire, Rock N Roll Heaven, Roll With Joe, Modern Art, Shadow Play, Elsu, Western Terror, Artistic Fella, Changeover, Million Dollar Cam and Always A Virgin. Adding interest to the sale will be the first-season sires represented for the first time including dual world champion We Will See ($2.5million), twice NZ Horse of the Year Auckland Reactor and former NZ 2YO of the Year Smiling Shard. The sale includes strong drafts from many of New South Wales’ most successful breeders, as well as leading vendors from Victoria and Western Australia. All yearlings sold on the day will be eligible for the Sales Graduate Pace for two-year-old colts and fillies to be held at Bathurst in February/March, carrying $18,000 finals.  Yearlings are also eligible for the Breeders Crown, Bathurst Gold Crown, NSW Breeders Challenge and Breeders Challenge Blue. Furthermore, 31 yearlings have been paid up for the rich Vicbred Super Sires series. Harness racing sales are exactly the same as any other sale in that prices are driven by the demand for the product against the supply of the product. At the upcoming Bathurst Gold Crown Sale there are only four Sportswriters in the whole sale and as a keenly sought after stallion at the best of times, Sportswriter can expect his four yearlings to attract a premium on sale day. With his first crop only half way through their four year old careers in Australia, Sportswriter has already produced 114 winners to date with stakes topping $2,700,000 and rising.  Sportswriter has produced 79 winners from his first crop of 157 foals for a percentage of over 50% which is right up there with the very best. We thought we would have a brief look at the pedigrees of a couple of the Sportswriters for sale at Bathurst. Lot 18 A  -  Colt by Sportswriter from Marysia 1:57.8 By In The Pocket A half brother to six winners including the very talented Mr Bojangles 1:56 ($138,509) and Myouri 1:57.1 ($106,699) while half sisters in Medea and Tyalla have already produced Our Pacquiao 1:52.9 ($152,126) and Baccarat 1:56.3 ($94,133). The second dam Aberfeldy left ten winners including the brilliant colt Reba Lord 1:56 ($384,880) and the champion filly of her year in Megaera 1:56.8 ($250,646) Aberfeldy won the New Zealand Broodmare Excellence Award in 2001 which is a good indication of what a great broodmare she was. Lot 42  -  Filly by Sportswriter from Wicker Bella 2:00.8 ($11,075) This filly is the eighth foal from Wicker Bella and to date she has produced five winners while her three year old daughter had her first start just recently and looks an early winner and is on course to give her dam six winners. Padabing Stride ($57,180) is the best colt from Wicker Bella to date while Bella Jam Jam ($32,530) who won a heat of the Bathurst Gold Tiara and ran second in the final is the best filly. Two half sisters to Wicker Bella in Wicker Maker and Wicker Bee have produced some nice horses such as Wicker Blue ($70,902), Mammals Maker ($40,813), Tulhurst Vee Jay ($39,929) and Mammals Rocket ($38,870) Wicker Bella has done a great job in the broodmare barn and it is hard to envisage a Sportswriter not adding to that record. With only the four yearlings available in the whole sale, the Sportswriters look sure to attract plenty of attention this Sunday. Harnesslink Media

With the Australian Pacing Gold Sales over for another year, attention now turns to other harness racing Yearling Sales still to be run and the Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale is the next cab off the rank. When looking at the catalogue for the Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling sale this year one is immediately struck by the number of lots that wouldn't be out of place in any yearling sale in Australasia. Pride of place amongst those blue blood lots in our opinion goes to Lot 98 which is offered on behalf of well known New South Wales breeder and yearling sales vendor Scott Robertson. A filly by Cam's Card Shark son Roll With Joe 1:48.4 ($1,805,102), Lot 98 is the first live foal from the very smart Rocknroll Hanover raceamare in Our Santa Catalina 1:55.6 ($78,160). Our Santa Catalina is a daughter of the imported North American mare San Sophia 1:52.6 ($86,164) who has left seven winners from eight foals including such standouts as: * Private Joke 1:52.2 ($153,265) * Raging Bull 1:56.6 ($115,581) * San Rafaella 1:52.3 ($76,605) Leading West Australian trainer Greg Bond paid $62,500 for a Somebeachsomewhere colt from San Sophia at the Sydney leg of this years Australian Pacing Gold series  Raging Bull, a son of Christian Cullen made $85,000 at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale at Christchurch and looked a star in the making with five wins and five seconds from just ten starts before injury halted his career and he is now being given his chance at stud by New Zealand breeders while a Christian Cullen colt from the half sister San Rafaella made $55,000 at the same sale this year. San Sophia is a full sister to the world champion racemare Galleria 1:49.2 ($1,814,453) who was undefeated at two and three and retired to stud the richest and fastest mare of all time. Galleria has since produced the brilliant Gallie Bythe Beach 1:49 ($581,978) while another full sister to San Sophia and Galleria in National Gallery has produced Traceur Hanover 2, 1:50.6 ($425,333) who won the 2014 Breeders Crown in North America. This has been a great colt and fillies family over a long period of time in North America and is also now firmly established as a highly commercial family in New Zealand. To have a colt by one of the big up and comers on the North American siring scene in Roll With Joe from a very smart daughter of San Sophia is a real coup for the Bathurst Gold Crown sale and barring accidents, Lot 98 should top the sale. An exceptionally strong line-up of race-winning mares and winner-producing mares augurs well for the harness racing 2016 Bathurst Gold Crown Yearling Sale to be conducted by Graeme Board & Company at the Bathurst Showground on Sunday, March 20. Of the 129 lots to be presented, 83 are out of race-winners – including 35 sub 2:00 mares - and 71 are from winner-producers including a host of ‘black type’ performers. Heading the list of race-winning dams are the Oaks winners Scent 1:57.9 ($122,082) and My Cherie 1:59.8 ($338,265), Miss Nobilo, winner of the NSW Pink Bonnet, Lady Titian Lombo 1:59.4 (Edgar Tatlow), the WA Sires Stakes champion Edna Anne 1:55.4 ($105,811), the Vic. Harness Breeders Classic winners Our Santa Catalina (1:55.6) and Our Ladylight (1:56.7) and the QBred Triad victor Aldebaran 1:55.6 ($154,289). The classic heat winners Howard’s Dilemma ($75,806), Missflite, Eternal Love 1:58.4 ($83,067), Christy 1:59.4 ($87,943), Ciara 1:58.8, Cherry’s Angel, Lady Lara Lombo, Miss Zo Zo (1:57.1), Unspoiled, The Magic Of Life (1:58.8), Get A Haircut, Duchess Of Dubai (2:00), Golden Rule, Lombo Onahi and Venus Ace have yearlings listed for sale. Other metropolitan winning racemares represented include Deetroublemaker 1:56.6 ($118,936), The Peace Rose (1:55.4), Straight Left 1:56.6 ($83,738), Golden Bow (1:57.7), My Janes Cullen (1:57.6) and Krysta. The 71 winner-producing dams in the catalogue have left 184 individual winners between them. Scent, who has produced eight winners from 10 foals – including seven in 2:00, is undoubtedly the most prolific broodmare represented at the sale. Her progeny are headed up by the Group and Listed winners Makes Every Scents 1:55.1 ($202,625), winner of the Bathurst Gold Tiara, and Governor Art 1:58.6 ($189,250), winner of the NSW Edgar Tatlow. My Cherie, Get A Haircut and Pierry have all left seven winners. My Cherie’s progeny are headed up by Albercross 1:58.5 ($148,624); Get A Haircut is the dam of Allucan ($86,213) and Pierry has left three inside 2:00. Besides the abovementioned, there’s half-brothers or sisters to a swag of ‘black type’ performers in the sale including the NSW Sires Stakes champions Usane Flash and Muddy River, Nickle Miss (Tas. Oaks), Karloo Kix (NSW Chokin Championship), Speriamo (Redcliffe 2YO Sales Classic) and the $100,000 winners Lord Lombo, Goulburn Guy, Must Be Nice, Run Riley Run, Treuative and Strongbow Lombo.
